My advice to him was to find a company that is growing financially and NEEDS to treat the employees well for retention.
He has worked for companies who treated employees well, like back in the old IBM days.
Having IBM on a resume used to be an asset but now may be a liability.
Not all bad at IBM - It’s good training for an alternative career a as a prostitute.
You gotta see IBM as training ground for people out of college AND you need to plan your exit as soon as you're hired in IBM, with a time horizon around 2 years. For no other reason than to get higher salary once you have gained experience enough to fly.
I know plenty of people at Silicon Valley companies (startup and IPO’ed) who feel cared about. Yes, high growth companies want to keep the productive work force engaged. They certainly work hard , but it’s not crazy and if not happy, there are alternatives. It’s simply supply and demand.
I’ve also heard of struggling startups that can burn out people.
Aim for the unicorns or potential unicorns.
