Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Have you ever had fun here?

Have you ever had fun working here? If so, when did it stop? I’ve been at Nike for three years now and I work with pain in my chest. In the previous company I worked for, culture was fun. There was a lot of work, but also fun. I came here when that culture got lost. To be honest, I regret it.

I was talking about this with a friend; who still works there, the other day. For me it was about 2014/15. We had an amazing team and got results beyond belief. As a team the things we did on trips, not individually, as a team, were incredible. Swag bags for big work meetings, custom shoes for the team for a big achievement, meeting athletes (for world basketball day when they brought in all the balls and hoops and 2 of my direct reports were out shooting and LeBron walks up and shoots with them for almost an hour, no entourage or IG just being a nice person) going to events or team dinners.

Then it changed, it started being about who knew who and their new product. I never accepted anything that was not approved by or from someone higher up. But people below my level getting new things every day and everyone slowly stopped caring about what the team got for what they got. I even had to give a bottle of wine back from a vendor because of perception.

Honestly Nike was an AMAZING place to work with AMAZING people.

2015 was the last year that I remember feeling happy and taken care of. Money, product, and food were basically dumped on us left and right. Weekly WHQ-wide parties in the summer and teams were encouraged to have offsites all of the time. I had come from a company that had been undergoing leadership changes, reorgs, layoffs, and budget cuts for several years so this felt like heaven, and exactly why a Nike job was so sought after. I was part of the Nike family now and that feeling seemed mutual among my co-workers.

Then the layoffs and reorgs started happening. Perks started to go away and Nike just became another big company making billions of dollars but continuing to pretend they were strapped when it came to taking care of their workers.

It’s a toxic, toxic place these days. Wasn’t always like that when PHK was in charge, but then again he cared about his employees and wanted them to love the brand as much as him. Now it’s all about power, politics and money. Employees are neglected, overlooked and thrown aside. Time to find another company that values us.
