Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Fear of not being able to find a new job if ever let go

I’ve noticed many former coworkers that have been laid off in 2019 still have yet to find a new job. I’m worried that will happen to me if I’m ever in that position. For 10 years, I’ve climbed up pretty high, starting at the way bottom and then getting to K level last year. Performance reviews were always stellar and I’m in a position where I do feel like I’m learning something new every week. But last year I had tried looking for a new job myself and had almost negligible results. From reaching out to many old colleagues to straight up applying to other places, all leads turned up dry. I feel like BNYM might be a curse on ones resume and that it looks bad if you stayed at one company for too long. I resent this company sometimes for paying me below average (as a manager, I have access to bands and averages ) but generally enjoy my work so I want the company to do well, despite how much things have gotten ugly since the start of 2019. I am not sure if I have an actual question here but wanted to vent a bit.

Unless you are abroad, you must choose another industry and tailor your resume/CV for each role. No "firing off" resumes.

Being in one place too long and also being in the same position is not attractive on the resume. Ironically enough they like people that have jumped around because they can find out how all those other companies operate and also means you can adapt to different cultures

I was laid off in 2020. No luck finding a job in financial services. I don’t think it is BNY on your resume. It is because financial services is shrinking and there are few opportunities for experienced workers.

Yes I got laid off Dec 2019 and I cannot find a job AT ALL. People DO NOT respect BNY on your resume in my opinion.

It’s understandable. Got laid off twice from here, both stints of unemployment went over a year.
Now working at a far better opportunity.

Keep looking, and don't give up. I got laid off when my previous company went down the tubes in 2009. I was out for 15 months, and then had interviews with three large corps over the span of two days. It seemed as if everyone's hiring budget had just opened up again.

Ask yourself: can you use the skills elsewhere? A lot of so called skills I needed there are navigating the inefficiencies or managing your boss, these will be useless elsewhere.

Yep it’s extremely hard. So try getting a new job now. I was let go last year and I’m 60 and no one wants to hire a 60 year old even with over 40 years of experience at one company. I’m screwed big time. I made tons less than you also. Good luck to you. Once they lay you off you are done they don’t care. I’m sorry I signed those papers now.

As others have said - keep looking and get out the minute you can.
There will be a point where it’s just too late to move and you will be stuck. And then you are just wishing your life away waiting for retirement.

Keep looking. Get out at your first opportunity. This company doesn’t let people retire on their own, they will do it for you... and make your life miserable in the process.

I was laid off in 2019 and can’t find a job in Boston. All the financial services firms are shrinking. Jobs are being sent overseas, automated, or juniorized. It is very hard to even find a job listing looking for someone with 10+ years of experience. I keep hearing that I am over qualified even when I put down I am willing to make 100k to 150k in salary. The younger managers interviewing me think I am old. I am in my late 40s and look much younger. Now that I have been out of work for a while, I am not getting call backs. Hiring managers seem Leary to hire you if you have been out of work more than 6 months (even with covid) and want to hire someone currently working. Tried switching industries, but have had no luck. Very depressing and I am scared. Always was a top performer. Now I am lost.

Always strive to do you best for yourself and your Business.
Work to you own high standard and nothing less. You will do just fine.

If all else fails Walmart is always hiring.

If you are staying too long at BNY, you probably don’t have the skills that industry needs today. Make a move or suffer later!
