Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Should I give 3 weeks notice?

I had been interviewing since the NewCo announcement and have finally accepted a very attractive offer. So I will be leaving IBM soon, but the project I am leading will is a critical one and I don't want to burn bridges by dropping a short notice. So I was thinking of giving 3 weeks notice as it will give them time to find someone to lead the project and for me to orient/handoff the project to that person. Do you think that's a good idea? Or should I go for the standard 2 week notice?

When I left last year I gave 3 weeks notice. I worked hard the those 3 weeks giving turn over to my friends. I worked a lot of overtime those weeks because I did not want to stick my friends. I still will answer emails and calls "that don't really happen" MGT was shocked I was leaving, but did not offer anything that would have made me stay. I am much happier now that I have left.

Over the years I have seen it go both ways. I have seen people walked out when they gave their two week notice (they were paid for those 2 weeks) Those were mostly younger people with under 10 years in the company. I have personally have never seen a 10+ year person walked out after giving notice, not to say it has not happen. I think they, mgt, want as much turn over as they can get out of the older people.

More likely they will ask you to stay those extra 2 weeks you just created. Don't.

You can offer a 2 week notice.

However, I believe US IBM employees are at-will employees, so I would be prepared for the remote worst case if separated on the spot or in less than 2 weeks.

Thanks for all the replies. I've negotiated with the other company to take a 2 week break between jobs. I need the break to clear my mind and take some time off to rest and recuperate. So I will be joining the new company 5 weeks from now if I give my notice now. The new company is willing to be quite accommodating and have approved my start date.

Given this context, is there any reason giving more than 2 weeks notice could be harmful for me? Do you think they would ask me to leave earlier, and then I would lose one week of pay and potentially 2 weeks of health care coverage?

The tech industry isn’t that small and nobody worth your time will hold it against you for leaving IBM. I wouldn’t even give notice, just push the button on Workday, stop attending meetings and wait for them to send your laptop return box. It will likely take your manager a week to even notice you’ve resigned.

2wks is more than they would give you. but still, I would give 2wks and nothing more.

2 weeks is more than enough. I would also overlap one week with the start of your new job.

Sooner than you think, no one will remember how much notice you gave. Give them credit - they can manage without you.

Your former coworkers will be networking with you to find their next job.

Why are you even agonising over this!??! It beggars belief. Put yourself first and don't jeapordise this new role by delaying your departure from IBM. If the tables were turned, they would drop you in the blink of an eye. Your project will survive, regardless of how critical you think you are. And the no one is going to bear a grudge because you left after the contractually agreed 2 weeks! That comment sounds like another HR shill. Just leave and feel the anxiety and stress melt away.

You're already looking at this the right way. This is a very small industry, it turns out, and the people you work with now you'll be working with again. So forget about what you "owe" IBM, think about what you owe them.

If you jeopardize the new job that has taken so long to land over "notice" to IBM, then you're just a damn fool.
You'd be a fool to jeopardize it even for the "standard" 2 weeks (whose standard, BTW?? - is that some sort of 11th commandment or something?)

You've obtained a new future for yourself.. get moving on it. And what made you get that new job? Answer => Why- it was IBM with it's YEARS of RAs - Duhh!
Another BTW - you landed the job.. so your new employer could give a rat's rear end if you gave 1-2-3 or NO notice to IBM.
Try to start smelling the coffee, willya?
