Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Upstream vs Downstream

Which part of the company has the brightest future? Where should we focus? I tend to think downstream will be more important in the years to come.

Upstream, duh. More people, more incompetence, so staying ahead and keeping your job is easy. Better expat gigs. And good exit opportunities. All the downstreamers commenting are r—ded. Downstream got shafted during covid with demand off so much. They got boned harder then a g– dude at an EDM concert.

Upstream made money in the past but those days are over. Prices may never come back. Downstream will have to be the earnings engine, such as it is.

Focusing on DS will make the company low but steady earner, there isn't much meat on the bone there. Upstream brings in the big bucks. Cvx always had an Upstream slant because of that. But it is changing, because the leadership's direction is changing. The future of refining is getting smaller because of the renewables. It will continue to shrink as more low cost alternatives come along that includes Natgas. Thats why you see so many people are moving to upstream. Bottom line is without large upstream to pull, there wont be any large profit in the future. And that is the way the course is charted for now.

Downstream is definitely the focus of the CEO. I see a lot of potential in this area.

There is another part of company called a$$ kissing, it will be around for long time, if you have no soul, try to focus there, one day someone will kiss your @$$ if you do it well for the big shots long enough! It has been the most important part of company and it will be in the future.

Neither. Upstream you will shuffled around the rest of your life and there is only a handful of locations to work and most are not as desirable. Especially overseas jobs are non-existent.

Downstream you can stay and have more stability but may not progress as fast i regards to PSG as there is about 1 PSG difference between upstream and downstream. Also some locations are potential candidates for sale or conversion to a terminal.

Which part of what company, Chevron? I was laid off. Why would I care about them?

Downstream made money in 2020 while upstream lost $2.5 billion. If that trend continues we may need to get out of the upstream business while we can still get value for our assets.
