Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Despite layoffs, IBM still leads in blockchain innovation

"Considered one of the largest companies to adopt the blockchain in its operations, International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) has drastically reduced its blockchain team after failing to meet its revenue targets for two years in a row. The layoffs however contradict the company’s achievement with the technology itself, coming fourth in the number of blockchain patents held worldwide."

Here's a patent that IBM probably passed on - it just slipped through the cracks:

Bear in mind, this is measuring patents which take years to process. Patents being issued today were probably filed in 2017 or 2018 at the latest. So it is quite possible that the innovation happening right now is significantly less than just 2 or 3 years ago.

IBM would've been better off using the money they spent hiring Blockchain "leaders" buying Bitcoin.

Blockchain as a non-currency technology is struggling enough without the looming threat of IBM patent enforcement stifling what little of it remains alive. Maybe in 20 years when the patents expire somebody will have figured out something useful to do with it.

I remember when Blockchain was yet another one of Ginni's bet-the-company moonshot gamechangers. I bet she got a nice bonus for that.

Is IBM leading in Blockchain revenues?? Who cares about innovation... IBM has shown in the past 10 years it is incapable to monetize any innovations!!

Bruh...there are no practical standalone uses of blockchain therefore lots of startups gave it up and hence ibm despite being a big player doesn't have much revenue to show for it.

IBM owns the patents outside of China That is a very profitable asset to have in your portfolio

So, what's the silver lining here??? IBM is leading in a category that k–led tons of jobs and isn't profitable? Doesn't sound like a model I want to be part of.

This appears to be IBM holding the “mainframe” legacy ground with China holding the Intel new account ground. Each side will pay royalties to the other as innovation proceeds, BUT if you are in GBS, I expect your future will be centered around direct IBM mainframe deals (think Fortune 500) and “partnerships” (think all other accounts outside the Fortune 500) that drift into Intel territory. Is there more to it than this? Of course, but this is the fundamental hybrid infrastructure AK is building. Farm the IP and build out/modernize the hybrid legacy Fortune 500 infrastructure
