Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Nike you're breaking my heart and soul

I get that an employer doesn't owe their employees anything, but that's not Nike. That's what made Nike special. Not anymore. The soul and care is gone. It's all about money, budgets and the bottom line. You're cutting teams to the bare core financially so they can't do anything but layoff people. Yet you're making millions in profits. Do you really think in the long run this will work out for you? Maybe for the short term golden parachute executives that don't care about people in general. My fear is I don't think Nike is alone, this is the new future of business. Its only a matter of time that Nike dies. We are at the end times of capitalism. Our future is fatal. Nike? Why can't you be different and keep the dream alive? Why can't you be an example? Why can't you keep PK's dream alive? That's the soul. Why can't you reinvest in your employees and give them a voice? And fire all the waste of time and a enormous amount of money on McKinsey and Bain. I believe they are the reason we are here because you don't know how to do your own job. McKinsey is the worst and so corrupt. Associate with corruption and you will become it. And here we are...

I am not sure if agree with all you put in your comment, but I must agree with the fact that one's experience with Nike depends on where you are in the organization and who likes you and supports you! I really do not like where Nike is now, they seem to try and do the right things for the wrong reasons in the last few years. They are focused on gender equality because they allowed boys-club culture go on so long that female employees could not take it anymore, they talk about diversity and minority rights etc now, because the top of the company has been all white male club forever. they are scared of bad publicity and try to damage control, and not really willing to change in my opinion. HR has pulled out completely from managing internal talent thinking that managers are doing it. However majority of managers do not even know how to do that and they do not even want to do it, all they do is to play the good cop, keep teams quiet, leading their people to believe that everyone is doing a great job and everyone is up for a promotion soon. Managers are busy kissing their managers back preparing fancy ppt's, while noone coaches, noone gives feedback, challenges teams, and of course noone is let go unless they get caught doing something very bad. Everyone thinks that they should at least stay on, so they could continue to buy cheap & sell online the cool shoes, so they could continue spending hours having lunch or at the gym or whatever perks they were addicted to. Look at the recent stories of a VP and her son! I am pretty sure many other employees are doing the same, they just did not make it to the headlines yet. I even know Nike people renting their company cars to uber drivers during the office hours and weekends. How is this even ethical? unfortunately I do not recognize this ideal place that you are describing, it has not been like that already for 15 years. and I believe everyone who has taken advantage of Nike for years is responsible for what you deal with now. I left Nike 9 years ago after working for 10,5 years, so I know the insides for around 20 years now. Nike was exactly the same then as it is now. Maybe you are referring to another era....

I worked for another big well known company that was going through what Nike is headed toward, and it's sad to realize this is really over. I saw exec after exec come and go as if the company was just a giant piñata they beat on for a couple of years before they departed with their golden parachutes. Zero ideas or innovations..just coasting on the company's name and brand until they found their next piñata. The scary thing is these people all knew each other. There was literally a cartel of sorts at the top of the company that hoarded all the money and only let other people from their club join in the feast. Everyone else got fewer and fewer crumbs until we left out of frustration. And that's the whole point - they don't want you to stay long because it's taking money out of their pockets to keep you there longer (perks & benefits, PTO, sabbatical, etc.).

You all need to realize Nike is now in the business of making wealthy people even more wealthier. That's it.

Not all companies are like Nike. I was part of the CDA layoffs in October. I found a role with a great company. I don’t have to look over my shoulder for back stabbers. The employees care about getting the work done and each other. Let me write that again, the employees care about each other. I know it feels like nothing will ever be as good, important or impactful as Nike, but that’s not true. Not trying to dismiss your feeling, but trying to give you a sense of hope.

What happened and still happening at Nike is sad. It will, most likely, get even worse. OP, not discounting how you feel, of course. Try the best you can to not define your happiness or even who you are only by your association with Nike. That is not healthy because you see seem to put so much into it yet Nike can simply show you the exist door anytime. Best of luck and wishing you well.
