Thread regarding Thomson Reuters layoffs

Ageism is everyone’s problem

It would be good to hear other people’s thoughts on this topic.
As for the CEO referring to “needing to attract younger talent”. First, interpret that as meaning young equals cheap to hire and keeps expenses low. Second, is he saying there is little talent among older workers, so hence the need to look for younger workers to find it?

@3res+19VVoEsB: Very well said. I would add one more question - how many times have you experienced the age discrimination here?

Of course HR cares about people. That’s why they say “feel free to apply for any jobs that may come up” as they’re showing you the door. Now that’s class!

They have definitely been guilty of age discrimination. Of course there have been some casualties from the younger demographic, but it is apparent they take out the higher paid folk, who tend to have more seniority and thus older. I think the only reason they hit the younger workers is to not be so blatant about going after the higher paid more tenured people.
I know of multiple situations whereas people were RIF'd and replaced by people 2 levels below and/or 2-3 times less in pay. What TR does rather well in many of cases is make it that the person wants to leave so badly that the severance is icing on the cake, so no legal issues. HR is complicit in all of this, obviously they are in place to protect the company, but they spew the "we care about people" stuff way too much, so its just noise.
I too am surprised that there haven't been legal consequences, class actions or things of the sort attempted.

They have not had legal consequences to date since they offered generous severance packages designed to avoid that. Now that they are cheapening benefits and severance, they may start to see more age discrimination suits.

Yes to both of your questions.
They want to be a start up. Only “young talent” work in start ups.
Also the brand. Older generations are unattractive to younger talent. They will not join if most peers dont look like them.
Younger talent is easier to train and more formable.

Ageism happening all over this company.
By now, surprise they have not had legal consequences.
