Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

What do you mention for the break of job history longer than 6 months

Hello,

As many of the folks who were laid off while ago and were unable to find the Jobs. I have a question for those in the similar situation and would appreciate, if anyone can suggest or advise what do you folks mention as the reason for break of Job History for more than 6 months while looking for New Job ?

Since it gets difficult in finding new Job when Job history has a break of more than 6 months, how do you cover those time frame ? In some case based on some other threads, it seems some of the folks are looking for more than 1-2 yrs., so what do you think, if Hiring company genuinely accepted your reasoning and gave you a chance even with break of more than 6 months ?

Any advise will be appreciated.

When answering that question, focus less on being out of work and more on activities you are working on, like taking online classes to improve a skill that you can offer if hired.

I always told them the truth. I was or am actively looking for work and making sure of a right fit. They leave it at that and move on to the next question which usually would be, describe the right fit?
Honestly, I would tell the truth and I have gaps before the pandemic.

It’s a pandemic situation. Employers are well aware of the economy and it shouldn’t affect your situation. I had the same employment gap and the topic never came up during interviews.

I'd call that period of time rest and salvation.

No need to make anything up. Tell them you were disciplined enough managing your finances that you can take the time to make the life and career choices that are best for you.

In the past I signed up for a b**t course to act as a fig leaf knowing I would be off for a while. The other option in the same situation is to register a company, put a few transactions through, and you have the valid cover of self-employment.

If you haven't done the above at the start of the process the only options I can think of are family caring responsibilities or fake references. There are companies out there who cater for that I believe.

The most important thing is to tell a career story that fits the facts, whoever untrue it is, and stick to it.
