Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Unfortunately everyone is just a number - If you work at XOM long enough, your time will come

After 37 years of service, and usually above average performance, I apparently all of a sudden got stupid. Same drill as thousands have experienced, the chances of being able to improve your performance to their satisfaction, when there was nothing wrong with it in the first place, is near zero. I was however in a better place than most with the option to retire. That was 4 years ago and I still have a bad taste in my mouth from the experience. All XOM had to do is indicate they needed to reduce staff and offer a package to retire. We would both have parted ways satisfied. I've been watching from a distance as the wave started with people in the mid 60's as it worked back to those just barely able to retire. For me it was great to get out and very happy to have the benefits. It's not what was done, it's HOW it was done.

Bingo! There are people at xom who are golden. But if they go to other companies they will find out what xom liked may not be liked there. It’s wise to make sure you understand what a company values and how to be excellent before taking a job. Also make sure it’s company wide culture and not just that of your boss.
I had a boss once who I asked this question and they told me to make my “customer” (another manager happy. This was a warning sign. If they can’t be plain about it, run. Signs of being an excellent engineer for example would be to troubleshoot issues with accuracy in a timely manner to minimize losses, increasing production , etc.

A bad company with bad policies. I can never get over the fact that they put you down without any regards to your mental health or actual performance. Sorry, but it is not a company for a long term employment anymore. There is no amount of money that can heal what they break. It stays with you forever.

I was 65.years old in 2016 with 15 years when they asked if I would like to retire. My ranking was trending down as I aged which troubled me a bit. But I took the retirement package and today I am delighted I did. This was my second pension. The first pension was with BP. I had a good run with EM and BP, both upstream. And today, I feel very fortunate.

Actually XOM used to not do this!!!! And they used to over packages to help those at 55 to go ahead and go!!! The point is that when you have ranked good or above fir years, your initial review does not show anything wrong and then BAM you are thrown to the bottom??? That is the issue. I would have rather they come to me and say “hey, we must make cuts! Can you go ahead and retire?” But instead what I got was “you are now a c-appy performer and MUST go”.... and they start scrambling to get me to PIP so I can stay, nope, I will retire and then they scrambled for me to get multiple people trained!!!!

I can understand some type of severance package for those laid off, but not for those retiring. EM has always “forced early retirements” by lowering rankings for most people closing in on age 55. Two or three years of low rankings decimates the additional payments plan, essentially meaning if you continue working past age 55, you will essentially be losing as much in the APP as your salary, meaning you work for free or close to it. So, nothing new for retiree eligible folks getting shafted, and no package deserved for status quo.

This is basically any corporate company. Exxonmobil employees just so happen to cry and complain the loudest. Bunch of prima donna.

I was here for 3.7 years.
And I'm glad to be gone.
I will never visit this Layoff site again.

They’ve been doing this for years yet we are all surprised when our turn comes.

I fully agree. 39+ years and the same happened to me. Dropped at least 60 points in one year. No indication of poor performance from my supervisor prior to the 2020 ranking of NSI. Thought the Company would have more integrity and agree it is the HOW they did it that bothers me. Change the the process to make it fit the desired outcome. Best to get this behind you and look towards to what is ahead.
