Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Give notice and share new company?

For those who already gave 2 weeks notice, did you guys tell your managers or peers where you will be going? The company you will be joining, anything negative by telling them? Or do most of the people wait till last day? What will you tell your boss if they ask you where you are going...I will be giving notice in 3 weeks, anxious for the conversation with my FLM.

I’m in the mindset of “it’s a small world.” As someone mentioned, you never know who will be your next customer, your neighbor, etc.

Saying “I’m in the middle of assessing couple of options right now. I need some time to be sure I’m making the best decision for me and my family” is a neutral response.

Obviously, thank for the opportunity at IBM.

If IBM doesn’t play big, you play big.

Anyway I’m trying to embrace the last sentence. Not easy when I am so angry with my scenario Lol

I would just turn the question around and ask her: if you were leaving and your manager or HR was asking that very same question, what would you say? That will shut her up and it will be end of the conversation.

If asked where you are going, just tell her with all due respect, you'd rather not say right now.

just tell the FLM you are looking at other options at this stage of your career. She does not have to know you already accepted. If asked in the future, you can mentioned you had interviewed but did not have an offer at the time of the talk. How would they know if you had the offer already or if the offer came during the last few days at IBM. They are keeping things close to the vest as required by HR and you should too. I am an open book normally but have been burned in the past sharing too much so I advice being careful what you share. Its not unprofessional, its business to keep some facts to yourself that are not relevant. This also depends on your level. If you are a fellow/DE/VP then there might be some non-compete issues to deal with but outside of that it should not matter.

I am the OP. Thanks for all the advice. I don’t plan to tell my FLM where I am going but if she asks for the name of the company I will be joining, what’s the appropriate way to respond? Just tell her I do not feel comfortable telling her last day? Of course I do not want to burn any bridges but also do not want to tell everyone where I am going till last day..

Just be nice and give a standard 2 weeks notice to FLM without saying another companies name.

Ignore whatever "creative" things people are saying here. You have already won by getting a job elsewhere. No need to do all this crazy sh– even if ibm wasn't nice to you (it's not to most people nowadays). Enjoy your 2 weeks pay while doing nothing and leave peacefully.

No need to tell who you are joining. If you want to be relieved within 48 hours, tell them you are going to competition and they will move quickly to relieve you (but you then lose pay for the notice period).

If you have an older laptop that you like, such as an older Mac book pro, see if they will let you buy it back. They have this new option to buy your laptop when you upgrade laptops. They will clear it of all ibm data. Just one more item to ask about that might be useful. No idea policy for people leaving the company but does not hurt to ask.

You don't have to tell anyone your plans. You simply tell them you've decided to leave and your last day will be yyy. They may decide to let you go there and then, so be prepared to return any IBM equipment on the spot. You have no obligation to tell anyone where you are going or what you will be doing - even if it's a competitor. If they ask, just tell them you are going to work for a company that you believe is a better fit for your skills. Never burn any bridges - you never know when you will bump into someone from your past at IBM. Sometime in the future, they may be your customer, or you may work with them again in some capacity. It is amazing how small the IT world can be.

If you say you’re going to a competitor, they can shut you down ASAP.

Of course, be sure you have removed all information you want to keep (personal stuff, contacts, etc) before you tell them you are leaving at all.

And don't tell them where you are going or any details of the offer. Be careful what you tell colleagues especially after leaving - perhaps you can tell them you are much happier and making more money with far less stress - that sort of thing, but do not give any technical or business info.

As for resigning via Workday, do it. I heard of a case where the manager did not find out until the day before, causing a big last-minute scramble. I guess it depends on how you feel about your manager.

"...so you don’t take any secrets.." I don't know what kinda secrets you'd be taking from IBM.

I would just say you don’t have anything lined up.m or the more common “I’m still deciding between options”. If you say you’re going to a competitor, they can shut you down ASAP. I worked In a different industry before and this was the norm so you don’t take any secrets. Most people I saw leave ibm gave our team the murky “deciding between options” response.

They mean just resign via workday and don’t tell your manager.
