Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Someone Needs to Call Chuck & Fran Out

Chuck and Fran keep appearing in the media talking about how they approach inequality and politic differences and that they are stepping up to the cause. Chuck told CNBC “I don’t think that any of us have the option to be quiet anymore”. I think it's time for the employee base of not only Cisco, but all companies in general to stop being quiet about exec pay, company performance, and how they treat average employees.

Chucks pay has been ~$20M a year while revenues have continued to decline and the stock price has remained flat. There is no consequence to poor performance and he keeps getting paid 182 times the median employee pay. This isn't limited to him alone but the entire rank of executives.

Meanwhile, the employees doing the work are constantly told that we don't have money for focal cycles, can't promote, have limited stock to grant, etc. because the company isn't doing well. This problem isn't limited to Cisco alone and is a broader issue in corporate America.

With all of this said, isn't it time that we start holding leadership accountable for truly taking career of their employees vs. them being the only ones reaping the awards? The rah rah media stuff is a smokescreen distracts everyone from the real truth. An extra day of PTO of for my birthday or giving me time to volunteer doesn't put food on my table, gas in my tank, or get me any closer to being able to retire.

The whole point of the post is about CEO compensation how CEOs make woke statements or otherwise grandiose statements of taking care of their employees while all the way laughing to the bank .. Agreed this is 100 percent problem across .. the board members are also hand in glove because they are CEOs or CX level guys themselves so no one wants to bring this issue up .. this is a global problem .. no one fixes what is not broken .. if CEO leaves another is brought in paying even higher because they are supposed to do a turnaround ..

A below comment says capitalism is not working. Capitalism is not the enemy my friend. People often come to America and blame capitalism, but how many of them want to go live under communism? None.

Anyone trust the Chinese government?

Anyone of poor caste treated well by a manager of higher caste?

And south american communism any better?

Cisco helped all of those countries. If you don't like it, then be specific about what you don't like, because here in America, capitalism works.

Another big problem at Cisco is rampant age discrimination and rampant nepotism. When I got LR'ed after 10+ years at Cisco, everybody who showed up for a meeting where they explained how to claim unemployment, etc., every single person was over the age of 50. Also, to receive a list of employees roles/ages who were affected by the LR, we first had to sign the agreement where we stated that we would not sue Cisco, etc. If we did not sign the agreement, we only got 1 month severance pay vs. 3 months pay + 1 week per each year of service between years 10 - 19 + 2 weeks for each year 20 and above.

@mdn+19vIsSGS The early 2000's were when Cisco started to go downhill gradually with each year getting worse than the previous year. In my opinion, Cisco started going downhill starting with the big layoff in 2001. I joined in 1996 and for the first 5 years or so it was a great place to work (actually the best years of my career).

40% minority on the board is not the majority last time I checked. It's still 60% the same old white dudes making most of the decisions. And the Indian executives were not the ones calling the shots. John Chambers was before and now it's Chuck. White males.

So yeah, too bad that the reality doesn't fit your bigotry and xenophobia. You can blame the minorities all you want, you are still being laid off by the white dudes in power. Again, sorry capitalism is not working for you.

The Cisco board is 40% minority, as well.

It's fascinating to see the amount of people complaining about equality, focus on diversity, blaming the "left" mentality as the explanation for Cisco's problems. It's convenient to forget that the current CEO is a white guy who was chosen by the previous white guy and a board that is mostly made of white guys running a very capitalist

Actually not true. We had an Indian female who went to a startup electric car company (around the corner from Cisco, near Broadcom) and a high level Indian executive (male) who also left.

Chuck just happened to be the only one who stayed.

And the head of HR is Greek, by the way.

You may wanna check your historical facts before air bending, next time.

If you thought that unregulated capitalism - the endless pursuit of profit no matter what - and the white rich dudes on the top would take care of you and now you are disappointed, that's on you. Blaming the minorities and diversity for the problems created by white capitalist greedy men is easy but won't solve your problems.

If Cisco wants me to be proud they should give me a layoff package. Until then I just perform by meeting expectations till I find a new job.

Didn’t CR have an author on the Beat a while back that claimed we shouldn’t strive for a meritocracy? I guess we are getting closer to that.

Actually, Cisco is promoting to show they are become more diverse. I am what some would call a minority. I have recently watched a woman in another group, who has played the minority card and status very well, get a promotion from front line manager to a director. No one believes she is capable but since the VP had no diversity on her team, she made a director position for her with 1 report.

You might think that I would be happy of someone of the same race skips a level and gets a director promotion like that, but that is the farthest from the truth. It is quite the opposite, as many of us in the BCP believe it hinders everyone regardless of race who has worked hard to get recognition and promotion based on merit.

The Cisco of early 2000s is sadly long since dead and gone. The 2000 to 2005 window was amazing. People truly worked as a team, especially TAC. At the time I was so proud of being a part of it, and the amazing gritty work-through-anything as a team and culture. Those that slogged through TAC then know what I mean. Best of times. Best of teams. How far things have fallen. I went from getting a personally signed Chambers Thank You to a LR four months later. Your loss Cisco. I took my marbles and helped build a kick-butt tech team elsewhere. Now we rip out old Cisco stuff for each network refresh. Maybe it is spite and some irony. I wish it never had to happen and that old TAC culture was still there. That is what it all was about. True. Technical. Excellence.

Enjoy your future of mediocrity and slow loss of market share. You destroyed a great thing. It just is taking a long time for it all to wither.
