Thread regarding Cenovus Energy layoffs

Satisfaction guaranteed!

I’ve only been here for a little over a year, not long enough to be jaded as most of the employees who come here to vent their frustrations. You could say I’m still “wet behind the ears”. Reading these threads has given me an understanding that nothing is guaranteed - not even a career. If I’m chosen in the next round of layoffs I’m prepared for it. I will be satisfied that I gained knowledge and experience and that Cenovus took nothing from me in return that they didn’t pay for.

When you marry for money, you pay for it every day. Same thing at Cenovus, but the company will break you before you break away.

I am well adjusted and realistic. I do my job and I do it well. Probably pretty good in fact. I do not buy into the “we are a team” “ build a culture “ kind of thing. I am here for the pay check and it is good so I do good work. No complaints. I just do not believe in any kind of culture where the employees are seen as expendable liabilities which is how CVE is run. So I do my job, be polite and respectful but I provide no loyalty to this company and I no longer expect any in return. So it’s an honest relationship you could say.

I get the management looks after themselves and enrich themselves and that is the culture here. So be it. If I don’t like that and something better comes along then away you go right?

Just don’t buy into any talk of us being a team or a great work culture or any talk like that and stay realistic. Cenovus is a place to collect a pay check and as long as you get that then you’re good.

That’s not being greedy or entitled, it’s just the truth.

My issue is that Cenovus expects loyalty from employees but does opposite in return. This is the only company I know of in the oil patch where when they take over another company it throws its own employees out the door. Both Husky and Conoco purchase Cenovus threw it’s employees under the bus without a thought. CNRL or any other company keeps its own employees and let’s go the ones being acquired. We are nothing to them.

One year in and you know nothing.

Cenovus is a good company but the thing that gets me is they are disrespectful to people.

When you make a commitment to someone and hire them, you need to follow through with that commitment to them.

Sarah W. / HR needs to learn how to budget and plan for the right amount of people .. and not over hire. We all pay the price for bad planning.

I'm with OP on this one. Cenovus has been good to me in the decade or so I've been here. No regrets whatsoever with fantastic colleagues and development opportunities in the company. All of my direct managers have been really decent people and supportive at work. I get that not everyone has had this experience, but I find it hard to buy into the evil and malicious management narrative.

Sounds good, but who are you trying to convince? Cause I can't say this new wisdom you've gained helps me much. Does it mean if I'm being overworked and underpaid I should steal a stapler to balance the scales?

People post on this site most often to express that their efforts are undervalued and undercompensated in comparison to people in management positions, when it's largely the people in management positions who are responsible for the underperformance of the company or the negative work environment experienced by many. There is inequity. Obviously the associated layoffs amplifies the stress and anger front-line employees feel at management, and the imbalance is further entrenched just by the fact that it's management who has to select which employees will be cut.

As you say, you may have only been here one year, but there are many people who have been living under the weight of this seemingly perpetual cycle for years. And, as you can tell from some of these posts, it has impacted the health and wellbeing of many people.

So here's a piece of advice, the next time you have an opinion to share or feel like you've reached the next level of knowledge on your spiritual journey through life, keep it to yourself.
