Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

PIP Spin

Loved the spin they put in that video on PIP being a process to benefit you, as an employee. That's right, a PIP.... classically known to be the most stressful 3 months of your entire career. Don't worry folks, 90% passed last year! And then what % went on to get laid off a month later?

I read all this complaining and wonder why you still work for EM. Ask yourself, “If this company is that bad, that f—ed up, why haven’t I quit already? I am awesome, why do I still put up with the worst company in the world? What the h3ll is wrong with me? As bad as EM is, I must be even worse or incredibly stupid to stay!”

I say to you, “Leave immediately and prove EM wrong.”

For all the talk of meritocracy, I have a question for XOM management. If we have this great performance ranking system in place for the past many years, how come XOM is a failure compared to competitors in the industry? Let’s compare with Chevron - their stock performance has been much better, they are on the DOW while we got kicked off, etc etc.
If we were to grade companies in the industry, XOM is NSI. The management and their ineptitude has run this company into the ground. It’s about time they went through the invaluable “PIP” process and then get laid off unceremoniously.

Hugs to all of you! Reading this thread is so depressing and makes me so angry. I am putting my notice in next week and I should be happy but I have so much anger that I need to sort out with a therapist. I was one of the ones PIPed who stayed. I got a new manager right after the PIP news and my manager has been super nice and perhaps it’s been worth it financially and maybe otherwise also to pass the PIP and look for a job slowly but still not sure if it was worth it for my mental health. F— EXXONMOBIL!! This company is the scum of the universe. And I don’t even swear usually :)

id–ts all. These mega-corporations have no soul. You don't jump through your arse for HR, the game is simple. The first year you are there you are a NOOB and excited and fill out all the forms to the letter of the law, recruit co-workers for endorsements, etc. The trick is to take last years forms and change the dates, if project name changed, change that. Maybe just maybe add or subtract a co-worker or two, leave in several that have been PIP or PIL. Now you will discover, your manager is happy you filled out the forms on time. HR will never get back to you, because they do nothing, HR is really human remains the chief officer slipped on the bottle stumbling out of bed this morning, lucky did hit head.

If the PIP is a “benefit” for the employees, can we exchange it for another benefit and have our 401K match back ?

I was in a meeting last year when the 8% was shared with management. I asked what would happen if all my PIPs passed and was told if that happened I hadn’t made the PIP requirements challenging enough.

Ask HR if they are committing to a 90% pass rate this year. The answer will be no.

It’s 90% of those that chose to participate and completed the PIP process passed. And not 90% of all those that were PIPed. That distinction is important.

"PIP being a process to benefit you, as an employee". Seriously? The HR VP, and DW gang is laughing and enjoying whiskey on the rocks! The whole mgmt. gang from the core of the company is rotted. I mean really, no care, empathy, respect for those people that worked hard and funded your RSUs? You all part of mgmt. committee are crooks and cruel animals. Rottttt in hellllll!

I think about my co-worker with 25 years service, who was going through chemo, and told she was on PIP because she was not working as hard as the others in the group. Forced to resign (PIL) because she was not physically able to do what they were asking her. I would not call this a "benefit" to others. I call this cruelty. And to know that she passed away soon thereafter resigning makes it even more sad. I know others with many years of service that were cut that had disabilities. Apparently, these employees add no value in their eyes.

Last year, they never told those that got PIPed that the pass % would be 90. Many opted out because the consensus was that it was a “veiled layoff” and there was no hope of passing the PIP and there was no point even trying to go through the process.

If one thinks last year’s PIP in lieu of layoff was the abysmal-low an organization can get, this spin that PIP is a process that can benefit employees is even a notch lower.

The key question to ask H/R is, "Of the 90% that passed the PIP in 2020, how many of those 90% are still with the company in 2021?" Remember that there was an involuntary layoff in 2021 which means that those that passed the PIP in 2020 could have easily been laid off in 2021.

Fake news.

If you normalize out the initial Pay-In-Lieu (PIL) and those that elected to retire and those that started the 3-month PIP and then decided to convert back to PIL when they realized that they were not going to pass the PIP, then I guess XOM can claim that 90% passed the PIP.

The reality is that 90% that were offered PIL, PIP, or retire were encouraged to not sign up for the PIP because it is so difficult to pass.

Wait what, you’re not grateful that you have the opportunity to be formally blackballed for the rest of your career at XOM? Entitled employees...
