Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Proud or Ashamed

Are you proud to say you work or worked for AT&T or are you ashamed to admit you were or are employed by AT&T?

Try getting a job after being laid off from that horrific place! People see it on your resume and assume the worst! My company was acquired by T and it’s been a stain on my life, reputation, resume/image since the day of acquisition!

I can’t even with the mentality comment. My eyes started bleeding when I read that. Time for a random d–g test.

Well, if you've managed to keep a job with this c-appy company for a long time along with your sanity, you should be proud. That's no small achievement.

I am proud of my accomplishments and my contributions to AT&T, the customer and my organization. I am ashamed of the way AT&T treats employees, customers and shareholders. We have seen too many big mistakes by leaders who are never held responsible and in the end customers, employees and shareholders pay. AT&T is hated and it is widely recognized in the investment community and by customers AT&T has a top management problem. No amount of this PR that they support diversity will make many like AT&T or respect it.

Personally proud of my time and accomplishments at T. I avoid mentioning it to friends and neighbors, however, because whenever I do, it becomes a gripe session about every problem they've ever had with their land line, cell phone, billing, TV and/or internet provider over the last 20 years.

Absolutely proud of my 41 years, no reason not to be, even after being let go last July. When I tell people I worked for AT&T and for how long, it is always the same reaction, "how did you manage that"! Love it!

In school a class was having each student get up and tell about their Father's job. Little Johnny hadn't volunteered yet so the teacher called on him to be next. He went up front and started My dad is a male prostitute. He dances for other men and if they pay him enough he goes home with them for the night. The teacher was shocked. When the recess bell rang she pulled Johnny aside and asked is that really what your dad does? Little Johnny replied: No It's not. He works for AT&T but I was too ashamed to let anyone know....... LOL

I am proud to have worked for SWBT, SBC and AT&T. I do agree SBC acquired AT&T for name recognition but started to really change the business culture, I often wonder who-bought-who.

I was a second line from 1999 to 2020, surplused (on my own decision as I had been looking to retire), and met the rule of 75. I am lucky I also have a military retirement (National Guard), so I qualify for a US sponsored healthcare plan (less than COBRA/Obammer).

I was proud of my work, proud of my co-workers, and my area managers were for the most part very supportive- and most were some of the best managers in my career. The issue for the most part were at director and above level- disconnected souls.

So yes- I'm proud of the company I worked for, proud of the support I provided to our sales team and customers, and proud of what I accomplished, the opportunities I had.

Any of you whiny b–ches can leave today.

I was proud to work for South Central Bell and BellSouth. AT&T is a different story. The general public seemed to actually like SCB and BellSouth. The general public hates AT&T and has no problem letting you know that they hate AT&T.

OP here. To answer my questions, will say when I started I was proud. Then we were acquired by SBC which started a down turn on company morale. SBC acquired AT&T for name recognition but started to really change the business culture. With that change came a drastic change in my attitude regarding who I worked for. By the time 2015 hit, I refused to be a company billboard. I stopped wearing the logo on jackets, shirts. I promoted the Company only if it fell in my lap. My proud turned to shame by 2017 and I was a 1st line since 1998. I left the Company on 2/2019 and by 4/2019 I dumped all AT&T products because of their price structure and poor quality. Their employee discount was nonexistent. In the end I’m happy I left after 40yrs of service.

I am very Thankful that I was hired 24 years ago. Great pay and benefits.

Some good managers, some bad managers. HR/Asset Protection......yeah, right. All bad.

Proud? 24 years ago when it was SWBT. Once it became SBC it started going down hill slowly. Got worse when we bought AT&T and kept the name.

Ashamed? Not at all. It's not my fault their service is C-ap. It's not my fault Customer Service belongs to India and also C-ap. It's not my fault they are still with this company.
I do everything I can to help my customers. Sure, I've listened to their stories about how long it takes to get a tech to their site for repair. Sometimes up to 8 days wait. I tell the customer that I'm not going to apologize for this company. I will do my best to get their service back on.

Now I'm with ABFS so everything is with businesses and all work is indoors. I do installs and repair. And the same goes. I will do the best I can for the customer. It $ucks that after I leave, and they need help, the number they call goes straight to India.

This is no longer AT&T, American Telephone & Telegraph. It's now IT&T, India Telephone & Telegraph.

Prove me wrong.

  • ” Will dump every AT&T product I use and stock I own via 401k the minute I leave.“

You know you don’t have to hang onto that stock in your 401k right? Dump that regularly.

I'll put it this way, there are companies with good reputations and their employees are respected by the industry and customers. AT&T, not respected on both counts. I had interviewed with a certain internet search company, passed multiple rounds of phone interviews and invited to spend a day for onsite interviews at their HQ. Interviewers were impressed with my skills and experiences, not impressed with where I work, ultimately I didn't get an offer.

If you looking to move or currently interviewing, be prepared with fight the bad reputations that these executive mo–ns had created. Don't take my words for it, try it and you will see for yourself.

Before we were 'liberated' by the deathstar I was proud to tell people I worked at DIRECTV. Then we were acquired by T, a company that was already despised by consumers for horrible service, substandard products, and predatory price practices. Yeah, I was definitely ashamed to admit I was with T because I always got the comments about how awful it was. So I kept telling people I worked for DIRECTV.

I left T last year to join a nonprofit organization and now am once again proud about my position.

For those of you still at T I feel nothing but sympathy. Except for the people who are actually proud of being part of the most mis-managed, anti-employee, consumer un-friendly company around. For you I have pity and scorn.

At this point, I don't really care. I was laid off in late 2019, and currently have another job. It's really nothing more than just a section of my resume now.

Neither proud nor ashamed, but as I near retirement, I do regret having spent most of my adult life working for ATT. For the past fifteen years or so I have thought about ATT as "they" or "them" (i.e. something other that I'm not a part of, in spite of the fact that I collect a check from them). Here in the Northeast I don't think telling people you work for ATT will impress many (any?), but things may be different in other geographic areas.

When I go to someone's house I try to avoid taking about it. I have FTTP in my community and everyone complains about it. From the TV pixilation to slow internet speeds.

When I go on vacation (what seems like years ago) I never mention the name. I do like someone else said on here. I just said a large telecommunications company. They can tell who it it is when I don't tell them who .

I'm neither proud or ashamed. I try to do a good enough job to keep my paycheck coming but fly below the radar. Working at AT&T is a means to a greater end for me. I don't tell people where I work when they ask because I don't want to hear about bad service, customer service experience, or get asked if I can get them a free phone.

Leaving this year...AT&T not a good place to work now. Reduced benefits, Incompetent Management, Spiraling Debt, woke culture, Political BS (removed contributions to GOP that voted against election results but NOTHING about the DEMs that are trying to overturn the Iowa Congressional election) etc. I am in a good place so will retire but feel bad for those that stayed to achieve the Rule of 75 only to have benefits yanked out from under them. I will dump all of my AT&T products once I am retired. It is a shame that retiree's can get a better deal with a competitor. If you own any stock in AT&T vote your proxy to remove directors and then dump the under-performing stock. I feel like John Stankey will continue to delete benefits now for the retirees but future for active (vacation). I can see future pension contributions going away as well as reduction in severance going forward. I guess the fact is I JUST DON'T TRUST THEM.

So ashamed and embarrassed. No reflection on me either. Direct reflection on how att is viewed / perceived by the public and how att treats its customers. One of the most hated companies in the country from coast to coast. That's att's reality.

When I go out with friends and dine with new people inevitably someone asks what do I do for a living. My answer is always generic. "I'm a Field tech for a communications company. When they ask who for , I always find myself preceding the answer with "well don't hold it against me but ..."

So yeah , I'm ashamed and embarrassed to say I work for att. Everyone I meet seems to have their own nightmare story to tell about poor customer service , overcharges etc. I think I'm going to start telling folks I flip burgers at Checkers. That actually feels less embarrassing lmao
