Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

What are the pros of working at AT&T?

I was leaving a review on Glassdoor yesterday and I wanted to be as fair as possible but for the life of me I couldn't figure out any pros to put in about working here. Pay used to be competitive, but with the lack of proper raises for a long while that's no longer true. Benefits used to be good, but with all the changes and cuts they made that also fails to qualify. There's no work-life balance, morale is in the dumpster, layoffs are omnipresent, management is incompetent... So I'm honestly asking, what is there to put under "pros?"

I feel sorry for those young new hires that announce on LinkedIn that they have accepted a job with AT&T and will be working in "blah blah blah". Then the AT&T LinkedIn chatbot replies back "Congratulations!"

the main pro of working at T is that they pay you, with real money, that you can then use to buy things like food, shelter, clothing, transportation, medical care, and toys.

well, actually that's not just the main pro i can think of, it's the only pro i can think of. but it's a good one!

I'd have to say to $2M I received in pay, $800K+ pension, health care subsidy, working from home the last 15 years etc. Other than that I can't really think of anything.

You don’t actually think we believe your nonsense about Glassdoor and you ‘wanting to be fair’ about the Pros for working for ATT do you? You just wanted another gripe, bellyache, moan and nashing of teeth commentary. Next time, just post something like ‘let’s hear all the things you despise about your job, real or imagined. Hope you feel better.

To the question posed in this thread there are many pro's but not any that anyone should be proud of. If you are non-management the pro is that if you actually trick them into hiring you they can never fire you (exception is surplus), the union will do everything they can to keep a dues-paying person on the payroll no matter how bad you are. If you are management the time at AT&T can be used as a notch in your resume. If you are an exec the pro is that you can rise quickly and be completely incompetent just by talking a good game. To @wpl+1a5jVWLs, you are absolutely correct about the micromanaging but you must realize that these college id–ts they hire as managers are only good for checking to see if your cones are out or if your truck cab is "projectile free" or if you did paperwork correctly. If there is any actual work questions to be answered they will direct you to someone who actually knows what they are doing, and it won't be a manager.

AT&T sure does employ lots of bellyaching workers. That's for sure.

I just got a whole box full of Chinese made PPE as an employee “benefit”, though I did have to pay for shipping. So you know, there’s that.

Though they are taking away the healthcare subsidy I was promised.

But hey, hand sanitizer!!

There are no pros any more of working for AT&T. Wages, benefits, work environment and reputation are all below other employers. Sad but true. SBC has always been a 2nd rate employer

The best part is leaving for something else! You know it’s bad when you leave on your own terms and all your co-workers tell you how lucky you are .

Worked for a guy we called 'Blue Falcon" a 3rd level and he forced his engineers to recode documents like it X dollars instead of C dollars to meet his budget. H311, old "BF" would end the
year within .15 of his yearly estimates for all monies types being spent. His boss thought he was
a genius magician, we all knew he was a lying crook. I turned him into corp. security - and they "investigated" and found no wrong doing. When you jimmy the dollars, say call a software update a equipment removal - THAT'S FRAUD. Either security was too stupid to understand fraud or didn't want to as this type of fraud allowed SBC to raise rates and save money that was beneficial to themselves.
Corrupt Company!!!!

If you had any conscience, this is not the company you would recommend to family or friends to work at if you expect a decent career. On the other hand , if it's merely a blip on your career radar......have at it.

There are tens of millions of dollars being stolen every month in company property.
Batteries, tie wraps, chain saws, B sealant, tape.
Fuel, propane, rope, mule tape. Pens, paper, tools, meters.
Wipes, towels, flashlights, spotlights, gravel, ladders.
Time on personal cell phones playing games.
I could go on.
They don't care-even when notified.
Just put those 3 cones out and wear your vest.

I think a lot of folks who left are being unrealistic what to expect from any corporatation the size of T. Most people I know leave T for retirement...not another job...Some of the benefits include

  • depending on your division fairly normal delivery schedules (try working at a startup before trade show season)
  • decent health and other benefits. Yes I know loss of the pension is a tragedy, but T is on par with other corporatations their size.
  • competitive pay, yes relative to other corporatations it's on par. Yeah maybe not compared to dot.com startup , but you can make decent money here.
  • a good place to wrap up your career, T is retirement's waiting room.. not the best place to grow if your talented or creative.

The grass is always greener..

Here are the pros::

  1. Being inspired by the leadership of Donovan's mo–ns
  2. Being lied to by McElfresh "We didn't lay anybody off because they were not in a collaboration zone"
  3. Having Stankey cancelling your earned post-retirement benefits
  4. A $30 share price - it was $39.47 when Stephenson became CEO on 5/9/07
  5. Having a Board of Directors that is complicit and complacent to the strategic blunders of a C-Suite that has no credibility because they are never held accountable

They micromanage so much, and have so many inane and arcane rules, that I get paid $40+ an hour to put cones out, clean my windshield, keep my cab spotless, do circle checks, truck inspections, return plug ins, etc.
There is hardly any real work being done. I do that on OT.
