Thread regarding IBM layoffs

This place is evil

People spend decades working hard at IBM, making sure to give it their 110% percent every day, skip spending time with their family to finish projects in time...and what do they get for that? Nothing. They end up being dismissed with no consideration like they never existed - and it's usually just a few years before retirement. I don't call many things evil, but this place is.

No, saving two months salary for a few employees they lay off is less than a rounding error on their books. That's not why, it wouldn't have made a difference in the balance sheets.

Not tip 5%, you are not a decent person. ... haha usa mentality... paying extra for standard service.

But seriously, I agree with you Gini was not decent person at all. Did you know, when she.was travelling to other countries on IBM plane, she would be on her own. Bunch of VPs flew commercial connections to the same.destination. At company extra cost. Sadly she was essentially incompetent and many many people got a rough enf of stick over last 10 years. Hey, but she got nice tip last yar... $38m.

But I suspect the new CEO will hurt even more people faster as IBM is falling apart quite rapidly now.

It could be worse. Like a supermax prison where they don't provide bar soap in case you drop it in the shower.
Is 'evil' the kind worked at by Eichmann ? Is 'evil' the work of the desk k–ler ? Unless you go to the source, your executioner is simply "following the orders".

I understand that sometimes business need to layoff people, but the way IBM doing this is just not decent.

It is like when you dine out at a restaurant, you are not legally required to tip, but if the waiter/waitress serve you well and you tip him/her 5%, you are not a decent person.

When a bunch of employees in my department get RAed, it was just about 4 years and 10 months after IBM acquired our old company. At that time, the policy was if you work for IBM for less than 5 years, you got 1 months of severance pay, if you work for IBM longer than 5 years, you got 3 months of severance pay.

I think IBM intentionally RAed us just short of 5 years so it could save some money. They also did not count the time we worked at the company it acquired.

So that showed CEO (Ginni at that time) did not treat its employees decently.

You ARE there 26 years or WERE there 26 years?

So sure people do AOK. I made the best of friends there. This doesn't negate IBM targeting older employees

"They ruined peoples lives"

I have been there 26 years, retrenched last year with 4 months pay worth payout. Completely disagree IBM can be seen as responsible in any way for your life. Its just one of nillions things that can happen to you and you do not control but need to be prepared for. If you really believe otherwise, have your "head"checked.

You are looking at the situation the wrong way. Yes, of course the people aren't evil. However, the way IBM goes after employees, older employees, is evil. They ruined peoples lives for a failed idea. Look at revenue etc. And its also illegal

IBM isn’t evil, most of the people that work there aren’t evil. It’s a corporation that views 99% of their employees as replaceable widgets. No more, no less. Once you understand that and treat IBM in the same way life becomes a lot easier. If you aren’t happy or fulfilled start having some informational type interviews, the worse that can happen is you learn you need to brush up on skills. I have never understood the ‘woe is me’ while not willing to get out and look for new ops. Now, there are a ton of people being overpaid for what they are doing, I was in that position the last year. Once that stopped I left and am very happy.

Terrible place to work!!! Discrimination, bullying, multiple management mistakes with no repercussions, picking up a portion of the workloads of multiple resourced employees,
no raises, no bonuses (took them away), etc....what a complete disaster Ginni created. I
feel sorry for the all the trench workers who have been abused despite all their hard work.

Get out while you can...I DID!!!

I had worked on a profitable company for 15 years, IBM acquired it, run it to ground in less than 5 years. I was RAed with about 20% of employees in my department.

All of us got 14 days notice, 1 month severance package (IBM did not count those years we worked in old company). Employee get three months of health care insurance, but the only option for the family is COBRA, which is very expensive.

Fortunately, I found another job in 2 months. Better pay, ~5% salary increase and ~15% bonus every year. So being RAed was actually blessing in disguise. But still, IBM does treat its workers very poorly.

I have heard IBM referred to as “The Devil” by several long term employees. Evil is accurate.
