Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Fear Culture Anywhere Else?

I used to work in Risk and there is a HEAVY fear culture there to the point where both myself and colleagues began to suffer high blood pressure and anxiety attacks. I’m curious if it’s like that everywhere or just this department. Shocking that they can get away with this behavior.

Middle and back office bank jobs will always feel that way since they aren't tied to revenue and competition is too fierce in the financial world. Think ahead about automation and outsourcing along with remote work and plan your career accordingly.

I walk around constantly looking over my shoulder just waiting for the grim reaper to tap me. It's a never-ending fear and it's absolutely a disgrace to have to work this way. You know you are just a number but what you don't know is when the number will be up. The anxiety and fear is real.

This is also in other areas, you are not alone. I suffer from anxiety and wake up several times a night thinking about work. The workload has become unmanageable and as everyone: I want to do a good job but it is just made impossible and it worries me. The lack of knowledge of some managers and teams, the overall complexity and patchwork of systems, the constant redundancies, the incapability of managers to answer even the most basic questions. I wish I could let go more easily. I just wonder what the company is doing about mental health, it just appears to me they are causing mental health issues.

I was overworked but I didn't worry about things that much. What's the worse that could happen?

Yes same for me in the tax department. They will work you to death and put so much pressure on you and then give you a lousy raise.
