EM is very good about performing group and individual health and safety assessments. The criteria is based on internal review not some State Dept website. They always provide guidance, make appropriate policy modifications and pay all expenses as necessary.

Most classy companies would charter planes to take people out and would provide extra security to make sure you got to the airport. This evacuation should be similar to the case of civil unrest and collapse of the government.

@former expat, it’s true people can leave when they want but the company abandons you with any type of assistance. Think about people who sold their homes, where do they go back to for weeks or months? If you do make the decision to leave , you can fully expect to be released from assignment and take a hit in the rankings.
The company is responsible for your safety while on assignment and should take proactive measures to evacuate expats and their families in situations like this. The fact this had not been done is a total failure with management.

As a former expat, I can tell you that you can leave anytime you want for issues like this. Company may or may not reimburse you for the travel.
Your safety is your responsibility.

Expats in India are the worst. Leave them there and stop paying the salary.

Management is close to trapping expats in India as they are mired in politics and can’t make a decision, although this could be the plan…
