Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

VZ is such a layoff happy workplace

Every year the week before Thanksgiving we tell people they're off the books at the end of the year. The VSP for Verizon 2.0. Rebadging much of IT to Infosys. Now we've sold off an entire sector of the company through the VZMedia sale to Apollo.

My job with the company is precarious. My significant other offered for me to move in with him during this trying time instead of locking myself into yet another 12 month lease. 95% of my belongings is going to a storage unit. I'm going to share his bedroom in the house he has roommates in. Luckily the wintertime has led to me spending weeks at a time there with everything being chill.

I've had friends and people say that I'm making a big deal of things when I KNOW THIS COMPANY. I literally talked about this with my partner yesterday. 2020 has been exhausting not knowing how long I'll still be employed. Desperately paying off as much debt as I could while obsessing over how long my money will last and how close I could be to homelessness. By significantly cutting down on my housing expense, my savings as well as unemployment will stretch farther.

There is no security in this company. But I bet it's the same in others. Goodness if it's anything other than terrifying. I called it by saying to my partner half asleep that we're due for another massive laying off or rebadging of people.

If you are an associate, save your money for strike. If you are management, update your resume in October. Updating your resume is an absolute must for non-union employees. Every October one should make that a habit of spending a week or two tuning up the resume. You prepare for a hurricane before it happens, not after.

Welcome to reality. This is how it is and has been off and on throughout America for as long as I can remember. It seems there are a lot of folks who've never really experienced anything but the gravy train we've had for a very long time with some hiccups like the housing crash, the dot com crash, etc. (small for some, life altering for others).

People have forgotten to or have neglected to act and spend like their current circumstances could change at any time. But it sounds like you are wise and haven't neglected this and are preparing. At the same time though you can't let it stress you out too much. Life is meant to be enjoyed. Don't let circumstances or media or people stress you out.

Just be wise and don't get sucked into hypes, unreasonable risks, or too much angst. Just remember, if you lost your job tomorrow, you're still you. If you like yourself, then you will still like yourself. Things will work out as they always do.

This is with most jobs. This has been an ongoing theme at VMG or Oath. Why did you wait? The rumors of a sale have been out there for a very long time. You should be brushing off your resume and looking as soon as Huff Post was sold. Didn't any alarms catch your attention? There were many layoffs at VMG and this was anything that caught many of us by surprise. If you were so stressed then the best thing was and still is to take action. There are plenty of companies looking for people. I am with your family that you decided that it was best to be laid off than to take action such as finding a job elsewhere. Nothing is enjoyable about stressing about being laid off every day. Time to find a way to look at it as glass half full.

Don’t stress. Get your resume together, get some more training, and then come what may you’ll be ok
Or go Union and have an entirely stress free life.
But don’t stress without making a safety net.
