Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

How strong are their arguments for returning to the office?

My opinion is that there is absolutely no need for me to go back to the office. I don’t even have to mention the benefits of WFH, I think many have become aware of them.
If I get strong enough and reasonable arguments as to why I should go back to the office while COVID still isn’t a thing of the past, I’ll be back. Otherwise, I will start looking for a new job.

@1eqn
Just announced return to work, 3 days on campus 2 days remote. Looks like we might need to fire up the resume machine and start sending out feelers...

Some good questions to ask leadership in regards to returning to the office.

I think Nike is considering a hybrid work model where you work some days remote and some in the office. But I wonder if Nike understands that for many of us a hybrid work model is more of a pain in the rear than working 100% on-site or 100% remote. I don’t want to have to maintain two separate work areas. Especially since I’ll have to haul a bunch of crud with me every time I switch locations, like some type of traveling nomad. I already have enough stress in my life without Nike adding the additional stressor of me working from two different places.

Rather than develop a blank corporate policy Nike should leave this decision to manager discretion. Nike: please let my manager do her job of managing me. She doesn’t need your “help” in determining whether I can or cannot be effective working remotely.

They had been very explicit "not a work from anywhere company", which answers the 100% remote. Ask leadership permission to convert to 100% remote and you will find the same answers. Exceptions: be the first!

Same as everyone has already said for me. I have been able to perform 100% of my job while remote, literally not a single moment where I haven’t been able to be effective. I love working remote. I do not want any type of commute, I want to work in the comfort of my home. If we are required to go into the office I will immediately find a job the allows me to be remote.

I’m sure we’ll get the tired, stale “you need to come back to collaborate and ‘something about a team’”. Laughable. Everyone on my team is immediately accessible right NOW via email, telephone, Slack and Zoom. Ironically it’s easier to work with my team now than it ever was in those horrendous, soul-destroying open offices.

I’ve already put my own flag in the sand. I’ll come onto campus ONE day per week if I absolutely must for meetings.

If I hear that Nike will require my physical presence more than one day per week my already-prepared resume goes online within an hour of me hearing that. Full stop.

I am ambivalent about working at Nike anyway. It’s a paycheck and healthcare and nothing more. So if I have to switch to a company that allows 100% remote work I will have zero emotional reservations with leaving Nike. I might even be secretly relieved that Nike is forcing my hand to finally jet.

The only reason I’ve stayed at Nike for almost 15 years is because I’m comfortably numb in my current role. I’m tired of feeling numb and would actually enjoy being uncomfortable for awhile in the context of a completely new job.

So go ahead, Nike. Do me a favor and keep-up with your tone-deaf tendency to ignore what employees are actually telling you. Sad to say but at this point I more or less don’t really care.

Nike will be competing with a lot of companies who are willing to offer full time remote positions. The more they make it seem like employees will be forced to come back on campus the more likely people are to jump ship. It's not like they're really making it worth anyone's while. Leadership needs a reality check because "working at Nike" doesn't have the same ring as it used to.

Absolutely looking for a remote job... the expensive campus is hardly the end of the world, but I'd rather not waste the gas money!

Collaboration is easier on slack than in crowded open office spaces where you have to wade through desks and keep your voice down just to say hi.

There are none....the world has discovered how to work remotely and it’s the way forward.
All this BS about being a team and a community and needing to be together is falling on deaf ears, people are smart and they will vote with either staying or leaving.

The only reason they need you back is that there are billions of dollars of new buildings to be filled.
The shine of campus is long gone.
