Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Contract shortened? then Extended.

I work in technology. Originally my contract is a year long. Then it got shortened by FLEX, only to have it extended for a few more months. What I don't understand is if you're already assimilated into a department and get along with everyone, know Nike's systems and policies. Why wouldn't they just offer someone like a full-time position vs possibly laying me off and playing the " extension game". ??

Nobody seems to know anything until the last minute. It's hard to plan for a future when Nike's mentality is last minute or " just do it". I think they'd rather hire foreign talent than local it seems nowadays... It's just easier for me to apply elsewhere and jump ship instead of trying to figure out how to stay on or apply for other departments.? Unless I'm doing it wrong???

I am not sure that I have ever heard or read about a Fortune 100 companies IT department or management being described as such a ClustF and embarrassment, I mean he ran ServiceNow, Timmy is on the damn Board, I think you still have a decent VC on the Board, can it really be this bad.

Didn't your Old CTO go to Columbia, maybe kidnap her back again.

At the rate they've been cutting perks you are right in calling out that FTE really isn't all it's cracked up to be unless you're on the sr management track.

Some departments only create FTE capacity for managers. And it's a popularity contest. I'd only go for FTE if it gets you a raise to begin with.

Don't stick around unless you like the pay/benefits, and seek out departments with FTE openings or ETW vendors that are stable and pay well.

“Stuck as an ETW”… as you sn-t nosed FTE’s look down on the contractors you may want to wake up, they make a lot more than you do! I see the caste system has been imported by Patel now!

Why on earth would you want to go full time knowing what you know? Part of me wants to joke and say that the very nature of you wanting to be an FTE at Nike means there is something wrong with you. Psychotic workplace, moderate pay and benefits. What is it that you want?

I found that when I worked for a Nike vendor I was treated way better than when I was an FTE.

I was just as confused at how they'd let a good worker with all this institutional knowledge just walk out the door while they'd convert people who didn't seem to do very much. At the end of the day it's a big popularity contest and people only want to hire people who are like them.

Thanks for the replies. I see other positions in Technology within Nikes website. They're within other departments, from what I'm told it's like applying to positions externally coming in off the street. Another contractor I worked with, had to do the same when his contract was up. It made no sense to me that they were essentially letting his contract run out. He was seen as valuable in many of our eyes and a asset. He got in with a different team, so he's good. The strangest thing is they hired a FTE not long thereafter to backfill his role. Who knows. Nike is confusing to me. I try to make sense of the bureaucracy which results in a headache lol.

What blows my mind is Nike seems to rotate or being a revolving door by doing this. For company that makes billions, they're very frugile or cheap when it comes to employees. I'd expect this behavior from a start-up or a failing company. Not Nike. Then again... I was warned... Oh well..

They don't look at you as 'management material' most likely. It might not be like this in your org, but where I worked this is how they determined who they would convert. If your role is more of an individual contributor (i.e. a skill role that doesn't naturally transition to managing people) then it's more likely you'll get stuck as an ETW.

It was always baffling that Sr. Management never seemed to get that keeping someone on as a long term contractor could be a bad thing. Like you said, you've ingrained yourself in your team/org to the point where you're probably doing stuff, or have access to info, that you'd see in an FTE.

Plain and simple: They value your work more than you as a person.

I would definitely look for an FTE role elsewhere in Nike, or at least another ETW that will more likely get you converted. It sucks to be in that position, but it won't get better the longer you stick it out - especially when you start seeing people with less seniority on your team getting the nod. Nike is not a meritocracy at all.
