Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

Is it as hard to find a job right now as people are claiming?

The latest round of layoffs has got me thinking about my future at Schwab and it doesn't look too bright. With layoffs now being a constant threat, I think it's time to consider moving to a different company. I'm worried about being able to find something else, though. From what I've been hearing, jobs are few and far between, especially for people above 50. Is this true? Is it really that bad out there?

@5lzz+1aOK8sPm/@6izs+1aOK8sPm Also left and experienced a bump in pay. Pretty significant like original poster. Our salaries are not competitive for like job titles AND responsibilities at other companies. Pay matches to our title compared to other companies, but work is well below the level we're hired into. Explains why comp is what it is.

I was only there for a few years. I literally couldn’t deal with how many people were just checked out waiting for the next sabbatical.

You're either making good money now, or you were just totally underpaid at Schwab all these years.

I got recruited right out of schwab with a 30% pay bump. Update your LinkedIn. If you have the skills, recruiters are hungry for talent.

He was hired as a software engineer at 61? That is amazing. My impression of most folks who are in their 50s at Schwab, is that they are not all there. I can't even begin to imagine a software engineer in their 60s. What is he, a Cobol programmer? Does he do Fortran? Don't tell me he's a full stack serverless developer at 61. I know they didn't even know what servers were back in the 70s, but hey. Serverless is a huge leap. Just so there is no confusion. Serverless here is fully managed services from AWS, GCP, or Azure. Think Labmda, DynamoDB, etc.

My IT/SW engineer partner found a job last April - in the middle of pandemic layoffs - within 10 days of being let go. He was 61 years old. He did take a pay cut, but still makes enough to pay the bills and has an excellent benefits package. I don't receive benefits with my job and we're at the point we need the health insurance more than the salary because Obamacare (a/k/a "Affordable Care Act") at our age is $42,800/annually for two.

If you have the attitude it will be hard, it will be hard. I had an offer within 2 months of looking and I’m mid 50s. Don’t limit yourself.

Difficult, not impossible. In other words, it is possible, just not easy peasy, hapanessy.

Over 50 usually means you're not all there. Those that are in their 20s like me, in IT, are all there and then some.

Hard, not impossible as things are returning. Best advice, do it while your skill set is still in demand and while you have a job. I also left like @fii+1aOK8sPm and received a great offer elsewhere. Always easier when you have a job

It's about the same as it always has been. It all depends on the field you're in, how well you've kept your skills current, how good you are at those skills, and how well you interview.

I'm in IT, over 50, but with a strong background, a good set of skills, and at least 'some' experience in all the right areas. It only took a few weeks to land a decent job. I actually had four different ones I was pursuing and trimmed that down to two then went with the better offer.

I can tell you that it's definitely easier and a lot less stressful to find a job when you already have one.
