Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Welcome to misinformation central! Most of this canard is from techs who really haven't a clue. DEG and the CO departments were moved into Core Network Operations (CNO) within NEO last year. You can't necessarily have them completely work-share, because they are separate titles classified as OSP or Inside/CO in the 21-states (excluding LNS/Leg-T/Telco23 in OOR) regardless of regional working agreement or union affiliation (IBEW or CWA). That being said, they are now in the same department with the same leadership upstream. I see some potential work-share, but not an abundance of it.

As far as DEG being merged with Business Field Services (Specials/ABFS/LNS), that ship came and went between 1/1/2020 - 6/2020 back when Business Field Services was still saddled to the AFO organization. When the reorg hit, DEG went to the newly created CNO department with the CO folks, Business Field Services went completely under Chow's AT&T Business organization and Core I&M/U-Verse went to AT&T Consumer (as Consumer Field Operations-CFO). Business Field Services got stuck with MLT system maintenance because C&E (Where DEG previously was) abandoned the work back in 2017-2018 and the migration of on-premise battery routines from DEG to BFS was already in the works before the split back in June 2020. Mobility Field Operations stayed with Access-C&E, so I don't see much opportunity for DEG in the Mobility space now either. My guess is they'll go back to the same ole routine of stealing "system" work away from other organizations (Usually Business Field Services) to keep afloat. Otherwise, decomm of legacy OSP loop electronics and natural headcount attrition will eventually dwindle them into nonexistence IMO.

If DEG work is going to specials, are the DEG techs going as well. Back to where we were a year ago?

Effective June 1st or July 1st I&M/Repair to inherent F1 Fiber troubles in ATT SE area.

Deg work going to Specials/Business Services

I think I read that Batteries Plus is hiring, so at least there’s a silver lining for DEG. When the position gets the axe on Sept. 15th, they can leverage their extensive experience with AT&T into the lucrative career of retail battery sales. Upside is no more stickers, downside is you’ll have more than one battery to know about. Just don’t let anyone talk you into licking the top of the 9-Volts.

Never understood why they didn’t combine the 2 groups years ago since the RT is simply an extension of the CO. It would eliminate handoffs getting kicked back and forth between the 2 groups. I guess nowadays it would help both stay busier in some areas

My 6 year old daughter changed the batteries in our TV remote control a few days ago. I guess she’s got all the training she needs to apply for a DEG position. The rumor is, it’s kind of a cake job.

There are thousands of site’s with battery back up. Many on customer perms......those batteries will always have to be routined annually. Whether you call it a cake job or not! I’ve personally have lugged 4 or 5 strings of replacement batteries...NOT A CAKE JOB!!

The only rumor I’ve heard is that it has been years and years since DEG (Slic-nicions) has been vital to this company, and even when they were they didn’t contribute anything that another group couldn’t easily do. Apparently, DEG has always been where guys go towards the end of their career because they’re lazy and want a cake job while they run out the clock.
