Manufactured layoffs - new remote work policy

Who thinks the latest remote work policy which is 3 days mandatory in the office and 2 days remote is just another way to get people to quit? Layoffs but without the layoffs?

@8jci, interesting. I was not aware that Nike named Friday and Monday as our WFH. Is this confirmed?

I can't help but thing that the reason they are deciding on Monday and Fridays are WFH are so all the execs with second home can have longer weekend in there other houses. 3 days in Portland, 4 days in Bend!!!

Folks we've hired (both ETW and FTE) who are in other states will be able to work remotely in my dept - just not the Portland folks. We get to endure the commute and some cr---y off-campus call-center like work environment.

How is THAT fair?

@yti...Exactly. I’ll show up three days per week, make sure my manager sees my face, then I’m getting right back in my car and going home so I can get some work done.

Likewise I don’t buy the culture argument. Nike turned into “any random large company” several years ago. Today’s “culture” means trying to find a parking spot, trying to find a suitable desk to work at, trying to find your scattered all over the place coworkers, and trying to get work done with constant distractions and interruptions. And then being P.O.’d that you have to endure that at all. There’s your “culture”.

It doesn’t go unnoticed that the people who make these decisions will retreat to their door-having offices, completely unconcerned with the chaos they’ve created.

@alt

And right in time for sr leadership to go AWOL for the summer.

Considering they don't have a true back to work date and are not giving any hard dates or guidelines for rollouts I doubt majority of workforce will be back before some high % of vax is reached and mask-off is okay. They are probably basing "September" off overly optimistic state estimates + layoff/reorg timing.

Oh, goody. Being forced to be in a Nike building the majority of the week, just to have to continue to attend my meetings using Zoom. LOL

I didn't see it as a way to get people to quit, though it may have that impact.

I see it more as a compromise between the original "You will return to the office" and what is likely an overwhelming sentiment on the survey of "Hey, I dig working from home."

I'm highly suspicious about the stated reason for having to have so much presence in the office being "because our culture thrives when we are present".

Puh-leeze... Our culture has been so diminished and weak-sauced since PHK and MP left, and since we have hired so many senior "leaders" from outside of the company, who continue to bring in external people rather than promoting from within.

So give me a GOOD reason why I have to commute again, to sit in an open cube environment with lots of noise, undoubtedly having to wear my mask the entire time, dealing with co-workers who wear it under their nose, and having to use Zoom to connect to meetings anyway because we can't all congregate in closed meeting rooms and nobody will be 100% present in the office at the same time anyway?!

That sounds like agony.

I may be forced to make a presence in the office 3 out of the 5 workdays, but that doesn't mean I have to stay there all day long...

@lio

Exactly my issue as well. I know there are many Nike employees who won't take the COVID precautions seriously. It's going to be a culture ki---r, especially if they are not enforced across the board. Will workers be peer pressured into not masking because their manager doesn't believe in it, for example? I know HR doesn't give a sh**, but they better be prepared to handle these types of issues if they expect us to be on campus.

To me working at my desk with any requirement to wear a mask is a real bummer.

I won’t be productive and I wear glasses so it’s difficult for me to be on a screen with a mask on. I’m not anti-mask or anything I just find it difficult to wear a mask and be working an office job.

What’s your set back for not wanting to go back to office? Mine is wearing a mask for more than 10 hours a day. And having to deal with people who don’t take covid seriously.

If this is true, it’s not a great strategy Nike. Guess what? A lot of great companies are offering remote work. Top talent will leave and you will be left with mediocre talent.

apcc and mia hamm employees have been back on campus for many months now. understandable due to the work they do. but other functions, this 3 on 2 off creates a lot of issues. you can bet that if the "manager" is in the office mon, tue, wed, all the hyenas will race to be onsite for brown nosing. unfortunately for many managers, if you're out of sight you are out of mind, so naturally when it comes time to cut, those who haven't spent happy hour on campus with their managers will be more likely to get axed

Definitely about saving money. No severance to pay out when someone leaves on their own.

I can kind of see it, but this doesn't make much sense for the projects they are already going to ship offshore, those employees will be out ofnwork anyway... Maybe ploy to avoid paying severance & unemployment

Sounds like a net win if they still need to cut positions. Come to work, or gtfo? People will make their own choices and feel more in control. It's a good thing.

Yes. And this is why GT reorg layoffs are delayed until September. People will leave on their own before the September "everyone will be back in campus" date. Fewer people to move back on campus, fewer to lay off if the herd thins itself before then.

Yes. Tech reorg is fully PLANNED. Implementation is on hold until September.

Messy, messy
