Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

I'm not gunning for a promotion

Sometimes it feels like I'm the only one who is not gunning for a promotion - I even politely turned down an offer a year or so ago. My reason? I see my manager and I see other people in positions above mine breaking their backs to get everything done in time. Some of them are working 12 hour days. I'm sorry, but I'd rather work normal hours and spend some quality time raising my kids then spend all my time at work for a raise that is not even going to affect my bottom line that much. In a company like this, promotion is more of a curse than a reward, IMHO.

i agree, i have passed on expat assignments and promotions multiple times. I am always told, you don't know till you try it etc... i'm not a kid in highschool trying to figure out what they want in life. i know what i like, and know what i don't. Would end up miserable... Not worth it.

I am a new first line supervisor. This will be second year of doing assessments. It really s—s to have to tell people they are NSI but the system doesn’t allow placing everyone in the top bucket. I don’t enjoy it but I try really hard to be fair to people. Understand the system you work in. It is a forced distribution. Someone has to be NSI. Not every first line supervisor is looking for s— ups to work for them as many on this board say.

People that are well grounded in their principles and beliefs are not changed by a promotion or demotion. Just external events that have to be managed by what is within your control. But character is hard to come by with a lot of people. If you can’t stand up for what you believe is right, you don’t need to be in charge of other people’s careers. But it’s not the title, it’s the person.

My experience is the opposite. However, my reason for not wanting to be promoted is because
It’s of the people who get promoted change for the worse. I don’t enjoy power plays and politics. It’s most likely the case eve site manager is not a good person. Large parts of what I’ve seen it take to get there is immoral such as lying, twisting truth, backstabbing, holding back truth, etc
