Whenever our club manager starts talking about the possibility of layoffs, guess what, layoffs happen. I imagine he is very well informed upfront when these sorts of downsizing happen.
This time, the other day he spoke that due to the pandemic we are barely making ends meet and that there will probably be a need for reducing the headcount of employees at our club. However, the truth is that our traffic and revenues haven't dropped since last year ( before the pandemic) and at that time there was talk about taking in more employees. There is no logic to this. Covid just came as a “nice” excuse to our leadership to do what they would have done anyway.

Pfft .. downsizing. My club is having a job fair this week and next. We are seriously busy and seriously understaffed. There has been no lack of business here. Curious as to where you are for there to be such a loss in business and if there is a BJs or Costco near by. We have neither.

Odd but most clubs are seeing a 3 to 5 percent increases over the last 2 quarters. The new fiscal year is trending at a 3% increase.

You talk about layoffs, but give no specifics. What did you manager say, exactly? Are more stores closing like in 2018? What sort of downsizing?
Whenever Sam's goes head to head with BJ's or Costco, Sam's loses. Better to turn the ones into low margins into Walmart delivery fulfillment centers, which have been going gangbusters. The pandemic is an excuse to restructure the barely profitable side of the business into the profitable endeavors. Like, no duh.
