Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM is not a monolith

I get annoyed when I see comments and questions that ask why are we still here considering what IBM turned into. But guess what, IBM is not a monolith. Everybody's experiences are not the same. Yes, there are plenty of unhappy people. Yes, the company could be doing much better. But I'm in blockchain and I'm more than happy here. I have a good and interesting job, I enjoy what I do, it's an amazing work environment, and I'm paid well. So I stay because I want to. Deal with it.

I worked on a project that I truly enjoyed working on. We had purchased a company and the folks in the other company were great to work with. Fast forward a number of years, the company had been blue washed into IBM, the people from the other company were being laid off and the rest of us were reassigned to other projects. The product we bought was put on the shelf as IBM could not get the return on their investment they wanted to. So you my like block chain and it may be fun now, but just be ready in case IBM decides that it does not want to be in that space any longer.

OP, you don't understand that even if you are happy in your particular area of IBM, you still work for the large IBM. The one that is managed by incompetent, greedy narcissists. And when the large IBM has another bad quarter and lays you off, you'll have no idea what happened. Take a lesson from those of us who have seen dozens or hundreds of good, productive colleagues get cut, not because they deserved it, but because someone had to go and it sure as hell wasn't going to be the people responsible. And when that happens to you, well, deal with it,

Well, most posters on this site are concerned about their fellow IBMers being layoff and treated badly, the OP doesn't seem a bit concerned about the people who were cut in Blockchain. IBM was a family when likely many of us started. Sadly, that's a concept the OP will never experience.

IBM's BC architecture is not a monolith. It is an insecurely coupled aggregation of incompatible pieces that is so non-performant that it requires a mainframe just to run it.

Yeah but IBM’s BC architecture itself is a monolith.

Hr and execs trying to improve IBM's image by posting good stories instead of actually helping ibmers by increasing their pay, giving better benefits etc.

Do you really think that posting this will change IBM's perception?

OP would have been fine if he didnt add that little smarmy Gen-Z "deal with it" tripe at the end. When he's laid off later this year, he'll have to deal with it too.

That monolith cannot be the one described by A.C. Clarke in 2001 a space odyssey? Who knows. In that tale, semi-humanoid apes hopped around this black stump before breaking into an animal skull, while in ibm we still have myriads of monoliths and the skulls that jump only those of the employees. In ibm someone called those monoliths silos, maybe b.c. is destined to be one of them as Z certainly is and maybe they will survive the ongoing mutation (maybe). The fact is that various hominids dance around them. And worse than a foolish human is a foolish career hominid. I doubt he is an exec, but who knows, it would be too much. At most an enterprising counter-whistleblower less than a spy and more than a fake, dazzled perhaps by the sacred fire of passion for "blue" but more likely by a few dollars more or band glimpsed in a mirage after the last manager interview. Let's hope the OP will never come back here to tell us amazed "..I've seen things you people wouldn't believe..." , but this is another SF story.

No self respecting exec gives a dang about a bunch of noobs on a layoff forum, of this I can assure.

Well hooray for you... you managed to get into a group that is supposed to have a future with blockchain...

How many folks, many with how many years more experience than you... can't get that role because "...they aren't recent college grads"... or "... aren't folks in africa that are getting no-collar training..." or "...aren't cheap offshore resources..." and so on?

There's lots of unhappy folks because folks that paid lots of dues get locked into a path of "obsolesence" while others are given the roles going forward.

Seems to be the only degree'ed profession this happens in. So yeah, folks are upset. LOL!

Somehow I don't think you should be judging others and giving then a line like "deal with it". They may have paid dues you know nothing about.

Rather akin to saying, "Let them eat cake"... and we know how that ended... LOL!

(Well they used to say Mary Antoinette said it... was guillotined... these days that's disputed.)
