Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

With so many people quitting, we might be finally safe from layoffs

I don't see a reason for more cuts when people are walking out in droves. Considering that Cisco is not bothering to hire any replacements, I'm assuming that's their way of reducing costs. This is a definite win for them because not only do they get rid of the people but they don't have to pay them severance to do it. I'd call it a win/win if we weren't expected to pick up the work for no extra pay. But we'd have to do it anyhow with layoffs, so it's not a complete loss either.

When sales contact at a faster rate than voluntary attrition, there will be layoffs.

Economic contraction is cyclical and we are due for a large one.

August will see a substantial downsizing.

@1qiq+1afBOH4Z, the job to be done by Indians? It is a joke. Cisco management is only thinking of the head count. It has nothing to do with productivity or product quality. Yeah, if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys... Why would the used car sales CEO care?

You're referring to a vaccine that is still under "emergency authorization". No long term studies. No idea if it will have side effects. If it hurts you, no recourse to sue as they have immunity. No idea if it could cause future birth defects, etc. If you're in a group that has minimal risk and getting it doesn't prevent the spread, the better question is, why would you get it?

Those are valid points about no long term studies, but it hasn't been around long enough for long term data to exist yet.

So far, people are not getting hurt from it (in the short term), so I guess I'm willing to get vaccinated for the good of everyone, i.e. getting us closer towards herd immunity.

The worry about future birth defects is a big worry for my wife and young adult daughter. There's little to no test data about how this vaccination affects women. Most pharma companies prefer to test with men because our biology is simpler.

The problem is, that I'm NOT in a group that is minimal risk of catching it. And my age group tends to have more severe cases and end up being hospitalized. Plus, I have other risk factors.

But if everyone had said "Nope, not getting vaccinated because there's no long term data", we'd never have beaten Polio or Measles, Mumps and Rubella.

What about health insurance? Can they refuse you coverage if you don’t vaccinate?

No, they can't. They can increase your premiums, like they did for smokers because smoking is known to cause cancer.

You may be forced to vaccinate to be able to AFFORD the Cisco health plan.

We seem to be hiring like mad nowadays in certain techs and dept. Too bad we cannot seem to keep the people so we are in a circle. Such is life in Cisco it seems.

If you feel safe, just make yourself this question:

  • can my job be done by someone in India?

You’ll realise few seconds later this question is also on management’s mind.

You could find that you’re forced to vaccinate to be part of the US Cisco health plan.

Sure but you forget something important: who quit? The ones who can, the ones targeted by the headhunters & competition, so basically the best engineers. The exact ones Cisco should have taken care of. So yes, you're safe ... how does the future look like? Asking the question is answering it!

I think they will lay you off if you didn't Vax. Had a manager get really irritated when someone said they did not plan to Vax. I think the push is coming from above.

Cisco has said in an all-hands that they are NOT asking people if they are or are not getting vaccinated. Since that's medical, and all things medical related are protected by HIPPA laws, so they can't ask. So far, I've not heard of any manager asking if anyone is vaccinated. Hell, there are Webex spaces where people are sharing tips about what locations have openings to get vaccinations.

But, they will be requiring weekly COVID tests if you're going into an office. Which they can require as a safety measure.

I just don't understand why people don't want a vaccination. There was no controversy around getting flu shots, so what's the big deal about getting a COVID vaccination? While I'm worried about its long-term effectiveness and whether or not we'll need annual shots just like the flu shot. With the flu shot, it's a guess as to which strain will be dominant that year and if they guess wrong, it's not very effective. If it turns out that COVID continues to mutate into various strains and they have to guess about which strain to vaccinate against each year, then I can see people not wanting to take it. I don't get the flu shot for just that reason, but right now there's not a lot of strains and data shows that the current vaccination is effective against them.

The goal is a workforce of predominantly temp workers. Layoffs will not stop anytime soon.

  • layoff full-time
  • rehire through temp agency without benefits

The culture is largely h1b so the manager was knowledgeable about that cultures concerned about Covid. His voice got very creaky and loud.

I don't doubt ultimatums will be issued behind closed doors.

Agreed. Same logic I had throughout 2019-2020. I think more would have bailed in the 2nd half of 2020 if not for the uncertainty of Covid19. Cisco served as a safe haven for those looking to buy time during 2020.

I ended up being one of those who willingly left for another opportunity.
