When they told me I wasn't needed here anymore, I thought it was the worst thing that could have happened to me. A few months after that, I am employed in a company where I am better paid, I work less for more, I have better health benefits and I finally have work/ life balance. Only wish it happened sooner.

You make a good point there; I recently realized the same thing about myself. My retirement investments are increasing in value by much more than my annual salary. Once I saw the light, I asked myself WHY I am I still working here? That made the decision to retire easy. I will be out of here soon.
Left under the Great Purge a few years back, ended up quickly at a better company who actually seems to value its employees (rather than T's active hatred of it's employees), has better and less expensive benefits, and where I get a real raise- 2.75% in a rough year. AND I didn't get told the standard T's explanation of "You should be grateful for the 1.234567% raise you got!" speech.

I left the company in 2018 of my own accord I could see where things were headed and I couldn’t stand the leadership or the management anymore. Since then I’ve almost tripled my earnings power, I work for a company that values me, and I have a great manager and an awesome executive team. In short, best decision I ever made was leaving that awful place.

I left T in July last year (involuntarily) went to one of its competitors, changed roles when I went there. However, the atmosphere is much better. It has problems too as any big companies do (delivering to customers what it promises, beaurarcracy etc mostly because it outsourced key areas and its struggling with that ), however its much better over here. I actually took a slight cut but since I left I heard that T's average raise was about 2% depending on where you are are many people got less than 1%. I landed here within 2 months of leaving T and since then I got not only a raise of 2% but I got RSUs that vest over the next three years. I hear T is even taking away options from level 3 people who where the ones who used to get them. Plus RSUs are better than options as once vested, the stock is yours and no matter how low the stock price falls, you can sell and still make money. he "down" side is the year it vests you have to pay taxes, the company cashes in some RSUs to pay the taxes so it does not come out of your pocket, but in some cases not enough RSUs are sold to cover overall taxes due and when you file taxes you could find yourself owing taxes. so if you get RSUs be careful the following year could be rough, but its a "good problem"
BTW, T should not despair. I saw an article listing the 25 best employers in NYC. IBM is on it. IBM has been a train wreck for many years and if they can be on that list, eventually T will be on it, right? LOL
OP the same exact same thing happened to when I left on my own except it was with two companies. at my second company and couldn't be happier. would of been happier at the first company too but making more money at the second place, I have been busier, challenged, my input is valued, I am valued as a person, and I haven't heard the word layoff at both companies since I left att. got so sick of the water cooler talk and what group is going to get hit next. god what an awful environment and wish that on nobody. like you wish I left sooner because life is too short for cesspool att. I can only recommend people still at att do the same you will not regret the move. and to the people who are thinking of working there run far far far far far far away you will regret it from day one.
Since leaving all I hear from recruiters and other companies is that they want no one who has worked at AT&T
Not sure about others, but this is my story:
Got the axe from Stink and his crew back in October. Spent the next four months looking for jobs, until I landed one with a non-profit organization. The pay isn't as high as T (non-profit positions aren't very high-paying in general, so this isn't a surprise), but the environment is logrithmically better. No more sweating about when the next round of layoffs is due. No more insulting 'town hall' meetings where senior management debases and lies to employees. No more hanging my head in shame when people ask me where I work. No more having to just shake my head at the stupid mismanagement.
In short, since leaving the deathstar I'm happier, more relaxed, get much more fulfillment out of my work, and have a new dedication to my job knowing that my efforts will go to help people rather than increase the annual bonus of a repulsive, arrogant, incompetent, lying, sociopathic douchenozzle like Stink. If I find out he and the rest of the T execs all went down in a fireball airplane crash I'd crack a beer and say good riddance.
