Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Hard to make a decision

I could hardly wait to find a new job and now that I have found it I am hesitant. The offer is good, but there is nothing particularly much better than the job I have here. I'm still weighing the options but I don't have much time to decide. How difficult was your decision to leave IBM?

I made it out in just 5 months. I started looking for a new job 2nd week of employment at IBM. Even in 1996 I knew it was a CR&P place to work. Previous employer called me to offer a job immediately. And I clicked my heels as I left behind a terrible job.

Change is hard. As part of your decision making think about all the reasons that prompted you to seek out new employment options. That might help you decide your course of action.

Bruh...
I dont think you have any offer otherwise there's no upside to being at ibm unless your offer is lower than ibm which is not likely at all.

It’s just a question of when to leave.
Most IBMers will have to go sooner or later. If you think you can land a better job, then keep looking.
I would leave while my skills are still marketable and before ageism is becomes an issue.

This really depends on what the other opportunity is friend. But if the compensation is ok with you I would just compare the skills you'd learn or grow and go with whatever makes you happy.

There are plenty of IBMers who want to get out and haven’t found a job.
You must still have sought after skills, so grab the opportunity while you can.

Agreed, non-IBM experience would show you can adapt and acquire new skills outside the dying IBM bubble.
The sooner you get out of IBM, the sooner you can start acquiring the skills to survive and thrive in the industry, including building your non-IBM network.
Think long term.

IBMers are getting a very bad reputation in the job market. IBM no longer looks good on your resume/CV. If you have another similar job offer, you should grab it. Put some distance between yourself and IBM.

What’s your alternative? Let IBM know about the offer and HR will take at least 6 months to process a retention payment, which will make you ineligible for any raises or GDP for the next 2 years per their idiotic policy? Meanwhile IBM continues to lose revenue, employee morale continues to decline, and you’re constantly in fear of the next RA. Come on, it’s a no-brainer. Leave as fast as you can.

Even if the salary is not much higher than what you have now, leave!!! You won’t be under constant threat of layoffs and your resume will look much better with the new job experience.
