Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Reputation in the job market

It was funny when a friend who doesn’t know much about this industry was surprised that I can’t find a new job, considering my experience at IBM. To him, IBM is still a very resonant name and believes that IBM brings together experts who are highly valued in most other companies.
How many times have you been surprised when you applied for a job at a small company about which very little is known and where you believed you would get a job for sure - and yet you didn’t?

IBM will end up JUST a mainframe company... if you have mainframe skills you will be alright... anyone else not so much!

I was surprised that Monkey Ward is still in business also! Maybe IBM will eventually offer online support for technical problems...

I have been in interviews outside IBM where the hiring manager has spent over 10mins slating the company and the "dinosaurs" that work there! Very disheartening and I am glad I did not waste 15+years at IBM because I feel the longer you stay there the less appealing a hire you are in the market. I see too much institutionalised behaviors from ex-IBMers that doesn't come across well to other companies.

I was RAd recently and gave been picky with applying for jobs. I found the job that I was perfect for and interviewed for it. The biggest problem was, the entire interview was them telling me that IBM process and red tape was terrible and not to expect to Implement "that garbage here". In the end, I didn't get the job, and it's still posted.

I was surprised IBM was still around when I applied back in 2007.
Kinda like how Mont. Wards is still around, but not many know it.
