So far virtually no layoffs in March or in April. It will be interesting to see what May brings, especially since that is when the Kyndryl offers should all be out by.

AK said on the analyst call 1–1.5 billion investment into the partner program in 2021. That means 1–1.5 billion out of GBS. Note the 1–1.5 billon is in addition to the 20% IBM wanted to trim GBS already

C&CS up 34% Consulting up 2% AM down 8% GBS total down 1% year on year with an easy comp. So who is growing and who is shrinking? IBM made no bones about it GBS will partner and drive growth thru the partners That mean GBS ahead count is going to shrink

@4gtr knowing something is going to happen and soliciting details about it from everybody who comes to this site are two different things. You've added nothing. Go get some actual information and share it.

@2uut+1antBbHf There's no way GBS will be cut by 50%. GBS will be IBM's biggest unit by revenue after the spin. It will probably be the majority of IBM's revenue in a couple of years the way Systems and C&CS are shrinking.

Before I left IBM was always doing small RAs. Almost no one I worked with is still there.

Posts like this are essentially useless. You could post this every week for the next 6 weeks or so, and yep one of those weeks on Thursday the US will almost undoubtedly do a pretty big layoff. It has become one of the rites of Spring. But just throwing it out there without any specific basis is just more noise.
The execs already know what 1Q is going to look like, and have to a reasonable degree of certainty for at least a few weeks, and the 2Q projection is solidly in place. So, it is really just a matter of timing and how many are RA'ed, with the Kyndryl spinoff being the wild card in all of this.

Is that a real "can confirm" or just another wildass guess?

@rvg said "But spreading out RAs over time only avoids WARN requirements to a limited extent: the legislation looks at a 90 day "sliding window" of layoffs."

They stole that from us! That's our famous "four hour rolling average" which we use to bill Z customers for MSU usage. It's brilliant.

Getting below 100k is way off base. IBM will overstuff the GTS spin-off and let Kyndryl deal with the over staffing. (lets say 110k) That brings IBM down to 220k heads assuming the layoffs and charges taken in 4th Q and 1st q are inclusive. Now let’s look at TSS and systems. Both are shrinking quite quickly 5-7% per year. IBM most likely can’t continue to absorb that shrinkage, and will trim the bad news. I expect IBM to combine TSS into systems, and then split off Power and storage if they can find a buyer (they are shrinking even faster at 25 and 10% respectively). (Yes they will keep Z and most likely high end storage) That trims another 20-30k heads off (TSS (non-Z), Power HW, Storage HW, and marketing/sales/channel). Finally IBM has embraced “partnerships” vs going it alone. That means a trimming of GBS (50%) and cognitive (30% legacy overlap) This results in another 35-45k heads worldwide Final numbers = 330 - 110 - 20 - 35 = 165k remaining Plus or minus 15k

IBM need to reduce number of employees below 100K , so more RAs are on the way i think

More layoffs is a certainty... we just don’t know when... IBM likes to make it a surprise!! This is how evil this company is!

WARN does not work like that. They can avoid WARN by spreading the RAs across multiple sites, its true. But spreading out RAs over time only avoids WARN requirements to a limited extent: the legislation looks at a 90 day "sliding window" of layoffs. So in particular, everything that happens in one quarter is counted for the requirements.

With Earnings on 04-19-2021, just guessing RA Thurs. would be about 05-20-2021.

With IBM already committed to 4 billion this year, PLUS the carryover from last year, layoffs are to be expected more often vs not. If they want to remain under the WARN act notification they have to offer more smaller layoffs
