Exxon is a place where you go if you want to see your career die. I believe it’s been a long time since we got any new employees who were here because they wanted to be rather than because they didn’t have a choice because this was the only available opportunity. Anybody who cares even a little bit about their career is already gone.

Lol. Not at all. Many skills in this company are transferable so long as you don't get pigeonholed in a specialized role (middle management, technology specialist, etc). I'm riding this wave until the ship goes fully below water.
I agree. EM is not the place for someone early in their career, you will not gain transferable/marketable skills. But for those of us who are experienced hires, 5–10 years from retirement, the pension and the 401k match offered a great way to go out while they lasted...
Why would I leave to create change in a company I no longer am associated with?

Depends on your job. Many engineers can very easily jump to another company. Market is hot right now! People are looking and willing to give exceptional employees a very good salary!

Ofcourse, with new performance assessment process that allows people being thrown into "any" bucket year on year based on subjectivity is not long term career with XOM, but rather it is year on year job rather. Only folks that have career is CEO, Executives, Mgmt. Committee members, and Managers.
