How would you rate your managers, according to how much value they add? In my case, all he has achieved is to encourage me and a few other people to leave TR as soon as possible.

ZERO. I've been asking myself this for years. What does my mgr. do that makes my job simpler, me more effective or our company better? Nothing. For example, managers sit in the dept. meetings on the relatively new business communication platform we all use. But it's other poor saps chasing the carrot that have the job of deploying it for their groups, making PPTs on it, etc.––in addition to their primary job. In a sane world that would squarely be a "manager" role: learning about and then teaching groups on new business applications. No shame.
