Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Infosys - where are you?

Interestingly, old style operational infrastructure team is still being supported by Verizon. The easiest way of saving money with managed services with SLA's is still not get adopted. Army of directors, managers and high earning staff with mediocre performance still supporting Verizon infrastructure. They are openly believe in old methodology of hiring consultants and SOW staff rather than India team supporting production. Management asking their employees not to share and corporate with India team. The local team work around the clock with manual methods of troubleshooting. They are having no clue of what is going in the production and holding up critical revenue generating production processes. They often rely on vendors to cover themselves for rca. And for open source, they troubleshoot for hours without any clue of the source. Its time to bring new teams into picture to streamline the operational support system. This will help to reduce the cost for the verizon, meeting sla's and will increase efficiency with nightly India support.

IT is a mess and is getting worse by the day. The mass majority of the IT team have no confidence and trust in the current IT leadership team since the Infosys fiasco.

Sounds like a comment from VZ India when you refer to us as West Coast. We aren’t West Coast, we are the United States Verizon. We are superior in every way over VZ India. Don’t forget that!

The constant west coast chest thumping in this thread is comical. If the vz teams out west had talent they'd be working for one of the abundant tech companies in the area and getting paid accordingly. They don't because they can't. Enough with the false bravado.

I left Infosys after a year of abuse by them and have been getting updates from my peers left at Verizon ever since. The system I supported is simply collapsing because the Infosys folks don't have the skills or the ability to learn the skills needed to do the job. It's really funny getting updates on how poorly they're doing. The only talent they have is suckering companies into thinking they're competent, tragic. Hope it was worth it Hans.

Colonial mentality? Applicable to a few folks of Indian origin.India is a hierarchical society ruled by Britishers for many years.India is a caste system society even today.

A bunch of them work against each others progress in the name of region, caste and religion.
A bunch of them exhibit dishonesty and illegal way either in positions of authority, power or otherwise engage in fraudulent activities to gain undue advantage over the others.
A bunch of them oppose the growth of their own country people to progress and rise.See the examples of opposition of India support.
A bunch of them oppose the H1B to get employment in the company.
A bunch of them do whatever possible in their strength to oppose H1B to rise in the company.
A bunch of them think themselves entitled for big posts because they worked in the company for n years.
A bunch of them feel insecure about their positions, therefore never make workplace an open environment.
A bunch of them holding positions never involve others in main projects, never provide information because of their insecure nature.
A bunch of them believe they own the resources and this company. Its their company with in the company.
A bunch of them treat their fellow subordinates with sahib or sir mentality rather than employee of the company.

The term sahib or sir was applied indiscriminately to position holders or rich and used during and from colonial time of Britishers who ruled India.
These terms are still widely popular in India subcontinent and inherit the same mentality of feeling superior than other human beings.

A bunch of them brought this mentality with them here in USA and have proud feeling when called by sir and sahib names.

pulse survey - when the results come out these saheb and sir people grill their subordinates for hours for their poor ranking.

Funny how information travel from one mind to another. Minus that line and check out yourself how you're comparable to a west coast manager...they are the only who know what to do here and what is the meaning of modernization. Are you even 10%?

Need to hold Managers accountable for automation, reduce incidents and results. The problems are largely the ineffectiveness of managers in their role as supervisors. HR’s role in their performance management is limited.Managers know there is a problem, are uncomfortable with what’s expected of them, and they spend their time on tasks/roles they find more satisfying to their ego positioning rather than what required of their role. A typical colonial mentality. Their training is inadequate. Most of them are reactive in nature. There is a big difference between generalized performance criteria(business acumen, perseverance is politically correct but not keys to success of their job description) and what directly relevant to the job(automation, modernization, devops).

@3faa+1aw0lYcB This is the problem with Hans. He makes decisions as to what looks best on a PowerPoint vs what is best for Verizon to be #1 again from a Quality perspective. We are now the #3 carrier for Quality. TMobile is #1 and will continue to be until Verizon changes its focus to Quality first....and what looks good on a PowerPoint 2nd.

Infrastructure teams are small teams, each working or troubleshooting same set of problems. Only west side team is doing pioneer job of automation, centralized monitoring and devops culture. These small teams need to be collapsed into one operational team and work under west side team guidance. We require leaders from west side to drive this infrastructure team.

Those who brag don't have. Infrastructure teams are divided into multiple very small teams, each working or troubleshooting same set of problems day in day out. Only west side team is doing the pioneer job of automation, centralized monitoring and devops culture. Other political players are just busy in discrediting and opposing these ideas. These small teams need to be collapsed into one operational team and work under west side team guidance with the provided proven automated methodologies. Existing insecure and bullying managers (withhold main projects & information for themselves; God knows why) can be trained to become duty and shift managers for escalation and time–sheet approvals if needed.

None of this matters to the C level. It’s all about “shareholder value”. All the blabbing about IT transformation from a cost center was simply babble. If it looks cheaper to Hans from a PowerPoint that is what happens, period.

@3hle+1aw0lYcB I agree both go hand in hand. VZ India ..... Big Mistake. InfoSys ..... Bigger Mistake. Leadership makes mistakes.... its now Time for them to fix this Mistake. Disband VZ India. Dissolve agreement with Infosys. Lets put Quality ahead of saving a few $$$$ short term. This fix will save $$$$$ long term.

The Infosys outsourcing contract never would of happened if the Verizon India model was productive. Also the project clearance approvals and processes that allow offshore resources to access production data need to be audited. Project clearances should be renewed annually. As is, Verizon is at great risk for severe penalties. When it comes to project clearances, the current regime has been laissez–faire. It's time for a regime change in IT (GTS).

@3lgs+1aw0lYcB The past voluntary redundancy program to reduce cost failed miserably. The CIO plan reduced cost at the sacrifice of quality. Quality was at an all time high before VZ India existed. Fast forward, Now that VZ India headcount exceeds IT headcount in the states, quality is at an all time low. VZ India isn’t part of the solution, its part of the problem. Let’s get rid of VZ India to solve our quality problem.

No offense to those who moved from India to work in the states where VZ service exists. We just need to disband those who work physically in India. Offshore is the problem. Onshore is the solution. Higher quality will result in reduced calls to Care, reduced Churn and reduced cost overall.

Interesting, the people who are against taking India support and managed services seems like forgot about past voluntary redundancy program. It was done to save costs. And India support and managed services programs at large scale floated by CIO to lower the overall cost. So firstly, you risked losing the best employees and now you want new hires ? Is that the plan? You cannot run the IT business with this onshore strength, you need extra headcounts and that's where the India support comes into picture. Ask your leaders(not managers) about the company strategy.

I think it will be near impossible to move to real Agile without bringing some of these roles back onshore.

We’re ki––––g productivity by asking one team whose members reside in India, the East coast, and the West coast to try and collaborate. Such a limited period of time where everyone is all available.

@1jcn+1aw0lYcB VZ India is NOT the backbone of IT support.... How can VZ India support a production system that they cant use in India. Can you visit a Verizon store in India ? NO. Can you watch Verizon employees use the Point of Sale systems in India? NO. Can you watch Verizon customers use dot com in person? NO. Do you have Verizon service in India? NO. The only way you can experience any of this is in the States... in the actual Verizon service areas. Thats why VZ India could Never offer the quality IT support Superior to VZ Employees in the States. Verizon should invest 100% of its resources to hire more IT employees who live in the United States, Verizon coverage area. And disband VZ India to pay for it.

Oh boy, OP mentioned coastal cities on both sides, are you kidding me. There is a reason for best companies and best talent reside in both coasts. You get what you pay for. The other places are having mediocre resources just for political reasons and having zero talent. They do basic stuff and cannot take a single step without help of automated recipes provided by west side resources. They are just bunch of operators.

Managed services is a joke. Production support? Hah! In some areas, Vz won't let them have access to production, so how do they do production support? In other areas, T&M contractors are being hired onshore because managed services can't handle the work and they've gutted the VZ IT dept. You remember the old adage, "you get what you pay for?" yup Vz is paying double. Once to managed services for breaking it and once for a contractor or Vz employee to fix it. And still the secret sauce due remains...

Disband India support? The backbone of your entire IT. NSA, all development and even application production support done by India. Grow up and come out of your colonial mentality. And still want to hide behind Karen slang– how long? Face it, its on the path of getting over.

1000% agree with those other posts. VZ India is worthless and should be disbanded. They are the #1 reason why we have IT layoffs in the first place. And they don’t have a clue what is best for Verizon sales employees who use our Point Of Sale systems nor How American customers use our online VZW.com systems
Quality from them is poor. Production defects have never been higher. Sales Reps and Customers are very upset. Sales are falling. Customer Service calls are up. All due the Poor Quality we receive from them. Disband VZ India immediately. Merica

The best option is to cut VZ India completely out of the Picture. Use only onshore American workers living in the States. And stop using contractor vendors like InfoSys and Cognizant . Quality will go way way way up if this happened.

Quantifying ROI by the human capital. Folks sitting in both side coastal areas derive more money per their geographical area's, are they having more talent than other parts including offshore? In this modern connected world, how the locations matter at all? Why these management folks i.e. the low and mid level ones, need to work from high wages cities? Verizon need to make rational choice of comparing the costs of different models and different geographical areas. And whether a new model can fulfill their business needs. Its infrastructure after all not a space X mission control center. Verizon is a public traded company and they need to give back profit and dividends to its shareholders. And that is the bottom line.

Whole Verizon can be operated from offshore ? Why not ? Why do we need VPs, EDs, Dits , Sr managers etc . So that company can save money money money..
