The big perk is it's a US work from home and I know I'll be doing at least 2 long distance moves in the next 5 years. I was also told there's some installation for internet which seems odd. I just hope moving won't be difficult since the job description says anywhere in the US. The part I'm concerned with is it sounds like layoffs are often with UHG. I'm coming from another big health company and that's a big reason I want out. I know glassdoor reviews seem overall pretty good with UHG. I'd be taking about a 10% cut to go to UHG because I want national work from home. The time off is about a week less than my current employer. It's a lower level claims position. Thanks

They’ll pay to move your internet line every 6 months
So what did you decide to do? If you took the job, please tell me how you are seeing things. I am contemplating a job too. I wonder what positions tend to be payed-off.
If you like eating fe--s and being brainwashed -this is The place for y’all
There is no such thing as perfect company nor a perfect job. All companies will have issues you'll have to deal with. If you establish a good relationship with your management or make the right friends at the company, I'm sure you'll have a far easier journey with UHG or any company for that matter. As it's not very common to find employers offering FT WFH jobs, I would take the job while keeping your options open.
You can only carry 40 hours PTO over into the next year and there is no option to cash in PTO here like at other healthcare companies.
The holidays are less here than the other top healthcare companies- 8 not 10 and Christmas Eve is not a holiday here. Promotions here are rare especially at the level for position you would be taking . With the LOW to NO raises/bonuses here, you are going backwards in areas you may never recover from just to telecommute. Telecommute jobs are plentiful now and the stress of constant layoffs and the ever changing objectives here to keep stockholders happy at the expense of patients, clients and workers sounds a worse than where you are. Good Luck. PS- the number of good reviews are because the HR people at UHG troll these sites and post to keep ratings up.
Do the bare minimum. If you THINK that working hard, extra long hours will help in any type promotion it will NOT!
Find a side job in case you get laid off. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of WHEN!
Always keep in mind that your boss was hired because they knew someone NOT because they have the intelligence to do their job.
Don’t count on any raise. I always say you better like the pay you start with because once you’re in that’s about it. It is not unheard of to get a 0 percent raise. Especially if you’ve been hired that year you will get zero.
I do get the telecommute so decide if that’s worth the cut for you. Otherwise stay where you are and keep looking telecommuting is now easier to find thanks to Covid.
If you are counting on making that 10% within the next several years......Don’t! It won’t happen nor will you get a bonus especially as a lower level. Those funds get taken away by the higher ups.
I have worked for two other top 10 healthcare companies in my career and this is by far the worst I have seen. The raises and bonus structure is a joke. Layoffs are constant, age, racial and gender discrimination rampant. HR here is a joke and supports the old boys club that runs this place. Like many here I hope to get laid off. You will regret coming here because you have never experienced anything as bad as this.
On the other side, I WFH, Optum a UHG company, internet is paid for, although the raise and bonus was as described in other posts, I got an increase in cash and my time. I saved 40 USD a week, driving 50 miles a day one way in rush hour traffic, which made my day 12 hours. That's just in gas, lunch not included, the reduced stress has been a wonderful., so for me it was better then getting a raise or bonus once a year. Note this work is not a tax write off anymore and many companies are no longer paying for internet, my wife's company recently stopped paying for the service as well.
I wonder how UHG has decent employee reviews online. 1% is pretty bad to keep people.
Most merits are between 1 to 2% though many on here have said they got nothing. They will work you very hard for little reward. If you are a lower level employee than your bonus is likely going to be similar. 1 to 5%. Also they do have spot bonus they call bravos but wouldn't count on that. If WFH is your main driver than go for it but to be honest you are not going to get much more than a paycheck at UHG.
Well thanks for the information. Sounds a little disappointing honestly. I can count on 3% raise where I am and about 2% bonus. The problem is the location is restricted to the state I'm currently living in and I know for sure I don't want to stay for long. The problem is my current company does constant layoffs and big ones where thousands are gone. Even people with 10+ years of experience.
Average merit has been under 2% for the last 3–4 years for the team I manage and there’s no guarantee you’ll get anything. Same thing with bonus, I would take this position with the assumption that your base pay will be relatively stagnant and you likely won’t get a bonus.
Check with your hiring manager on the internet thing, some roles are required to use company provided service and other roles can decline that and use their own as long as it meets certain requirements.
As far as layoffs go, that stress is constant here.
I would agree with 1st comment you received. It will be your personal choice to take the job with UHG or any company if the calculated benefit outweighs the calculated risks. Most, if not all, companies do layoffs so layoffs are not unique to UHG. However, taking 10% pay cut, and reducing your time off by about one week is a cost that will need to be compensated. I'm guessing WFH would compensate..??
In my department we were told to be grateful for a 1.5 percent raise and about a three percent bonus (for a meets/exceeds expectations review) because supposedly not everyone got one. And this has been the pattern for at least 10 years in spite of record profits and my department doing ok... although falling short of goals that were never achievable in the first place.
Thanks for the info. So bad raises like 2%? Do most employees get a bonus of some sort?
I wouldn't let the reviews here stop you if the job solves a problem you have. It will probably be fine for awhile at least. But never assume your job is completely safe or that you are too valuable for them to layoff. Nor should you plan to ever get a raise or bonus no matter what they tell you. Even if you do get one, it might literally be too small to notice on your check, especially since the cost of your benefits goes up every year at approximately the same time as raises and bonuses so if you are lucky you break even and if you are unlucky you actually make less.
But...I do have coworkers who moved while WFH and the company seemed fine with it all. So there are some good things.
