Do only what you have to, nothing less, nothing more. If you want to climb the ladder here, you can't appear as a treat to anybody. We have so many incompetent managers that anybody who stands out represents a threat to their jobs. They're going to make you stay exactly where you are so they don't have to worry that their incompetence is going to be called out. As simple as that.

One of the first things I was told when I was hired on was to network, network, network. If you want to move up it's not about job skills or job performance, it's about who you know. And now having been at the bank a while, I have seen it first hand where they promote based on the buddy system.
Total BS, you get promoted on technical and managerial skills, proven track of accomplishments, hard work and the desire to advance. It is expected of you to advance and move around. Knowing the right people and being tactful also helps.
That is so true about being a threat to some of these incompetent managers. I thought it was only me thinking this way but others here are seeing the same thing. This company only promotes dummies and demotes smarties .

Very true. Upper management knows you know what they don’t know. They do ALOT of talking around whatever and not know the business they are managing. Again the bank is advancing based on D&I or who their buddy is. Not what you know.
that's not been my experience. the group i work in, everybody is supportive of each other. my manager is even encouraging me to move up a band.
I agree with the OP, I don't want to appear as a treat to anybody. That could threaten my career and jeopardize my advancement.
