Thread regarding Sam's Club layoffs

All or nothing?

Now they are also going through and trying to get rid of older partners. Doesn't matter if you out work 90% of most people. If you can't do one thing they want you gone.

This is absolutely true. I know a person who did a fantastic job, but found herself on the layoff list most likely just because she wasn’t perfect at absolutely everything. If there is just one thing missing, even if it's some little thing that can be learned or corrected very quickly - it's already a bad sign. Agree?

A NFL team isn’t going to keep a running back who can only produce 500 yards a season. At the very least that player is going to make a lot less money. When people can’t do a job anymore at Sam’s because of ‘old age’ they should find a position they can excel at. There is no reason other’s making less money should pick up the work for the long-termer. I am a 20 yr associate and it’s demoralizing to have fellow 20 yr coworkers refuse to do certain things cause they are “old”.

Gm were always intended to only stay 2 to 3 years max at any one club due to the fact they don't want them becoming to friendly or lax in company policy with associates. It's a fact!!

I am older way older and I do club pick up and I lift heavy waters, dog food ect. And I take them out to vehicles in the hot. So never under estimate an older person and what they can do. I am over 50. I hate when they do that to older people.

It has nothing to do with not keeping up or not being able to do something...It has to do with being there for so long and making more money. They find any id--tic excuse to let you go and replace you for half as much money. How does that make new hires feel? Long timers...it's time to enjoy life.

Just wait until the new gm rotation. You will eventually get one that is called "The Cleaner" which is an actual manager specifically brought in to clean house.

I am a 31 year associate. For about 3 years the arthritis in my knees kept me from being very productive when walking. On the forklift I was still able to do quite well even though I was enduring quite a bit of pain. As time went on and especially when night crew went away my productivity continued to decrease. I never said no or declined an assignment because of my pain. I got my tasks done. By September of 2020 I had to start walking with a cane. When doing floor work I would lean on the handle of a pallet jack when moving a skid. When test scanning or doing an audit I leaned on a shopping cart to get around. Each day I expected a call to the office to be coached for productivity. That day never came. My management team saw my struggle and were gracious. Likely more gracious than needed to be. In January of 2021 I went on LOA to have Knee Replacement Surgery. In March I had the second knee replaced. I am do to return to work at the end of June. I am very grateful I was not fired before I was able to take advantage of Walmart's Centers of Excellence program for knee and hip replacements. If you have Walmart Insurance and go through the Centers of Excellence program Walmart pays 100 % of the surgery and hospital costs. Because my managers were gracious I now have new knees and a chance at a better life.

@qey Not being able to lift heavy items or not lifting heavy things fast enough is one of the most common and often used reasons to get rid of older workers. I know, it happened to my neighbor. It isn't just Sam's either, many employers do it regularly.

I am older and work very hard. I am right out there, zoning and stocking. Older people have more respect for the individual also. We know how to be kind.

Us older associates have a lot of knowledge that they don't teach anymore. At my club I do not feel like they are trying to get rid of me. They realize it is the long term associates that hold things together. I have a good group of managers. Im thankful for that.

Oh, yes. I've seen it first hand. We had an older gentleman, members loved and so did we. This manager fired him, because he couldn't keep up. It was right about the time they did away with the night shift, and the floor associates were switched to merchandisers. He couldn't lift the cases of water and sodas fast enough. He'd been at this store since it opened. They fired him without a thought. It was the saddest thing. Cold. Heartless.

You have no value to a corporation. No matter how faithful a dog you've been. You can't keep up, you get fired.
