Exxon proud

I can remember when Exxon employees were pleased to be working for their company. You could just about pick them out in the crowd because they carried themselves with great pride for who they were technically and the company they represented. What has happened?

EM has a bit of a unique and strange culture. I was at the company for a little over 5 years and I was shocked at how people talked about their career. It was as if one mistake a EM could set you back permanently, it was EM or bust.

It seems to me that people have been stripped of their confidence. I think people have ceded to much control of their career over to the company and it has caused this a lot of resentment notlw that the company has been so aggressive with cost cuts.

@1hyx+1b1nJQ9z Got to agree. I wonder many middle management employees were not laid off. They do not bring much value and are a drag to the organisation. No wonder the younger employees are leaving or seeking for jobs now.

Based on history, all great countries will come to an end eventually as they become complacent and extraordinarily lavish with all the riches and they start to make mistakes. Similarly great companies too go thru similar cycles. There are a couple of companies today that are going thru this. Some are being “saved” by their governments as they are considered “too big to fail” as they will impact the economy.

EM is in this phase of this cycle. I am sure many of us have seen the “mistakes” of EM over the years and I do not want to repeat it all here. A few examples are the change in business outlook due to Climate Change; investment/over investment strategies. It’s always easy, on hindsight to spot such mistakes, I must admit. Only a good Management Team who recognises it early and can turn it around and this has happened in some companies as well. The current team is not the right one, in my opinion. A change is needed to save the Company.

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Exxon was built strong and resilient due to oil/gas. Nepotism and laissez-faire management filled up quickly. Any errors can be overlooked and cost can easily be footed. Now since mid/upper management is hammer down on saving. They are looking for "cost saving" measures like hiring contractors, lowering benefits, forced early retirement, putting more work on the employees, etc. Since management never knew what people did, they can easily make the call to drop them.

Many mid and upper management can make short term calls to make themselves look good.
Not knowing that it could affect EM in the long term. Even if they get axed in the future for that, they make out like bandits

  • the company has for too long "pi---d on people and told them it's raining". Trust, which is core to success has been lost in our workforce. Executives just cannot see how the performance system has torn the company apart.

What parallel universe did you come from?!?! XOM employees have never been good at anything technical. All they have ever done is goof off and ride the shirt coat tails of the field workers.

One potential cause in the drop in technical quality is due to computer technology. You are starting to see people who grew up on PowerPoint. This software gives people the false impression that they know what they are doing. If management is also weak then you can have a bunch of technical garbage that is made to be very convincing with a slick,presentation. We need to make sure this nonsense does not get into the university level. That appears to be the only vetting these days.

The company, culture, and environment began to rot from the inside several years ago. This place has become unrecognizable over the past 10+ years. I use to enjoy and have fun coming to work and working with the people here. Slowly the company began to not value real work and treat the real workers like cr-p. They only value folks that talk a good game but offer no real value. As it progressed I hated this place more and more everyday and most the people i came in contact with. Some of the most arrogant, backstabbing, worthless, do nothing, know nothing people I've ever encountered.
