Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Layoffs coming in Marketing...

Was told by my manager that I'll be let go at some point in July and to start looking for jobs... No information on specific timeline but sounds like it will be far reaching in at least my part of marketing. Manager could not confirm that there will be any severance. I'm starting to hear about others resigning as opposed to being let go so seems like severance may be unlikely... anyone else hear of anything?

CMO still has 19 useless reports

Post from TheLayoff.com

I am no longer with IBM, but I know 2 people who know they are on the list. They report to 2 different FLM (and not the same 2nd line, even).

Seems like this is so big that people are just saying "to he!!" with protocol.

When I was a manager during layoffs, I knew who was being let go. I was sworn to secrecy and not inform anyone in advance. However, I cared enough about my impacted employees (2 of them), to strongly advise them to consider options moving forward.
I know of a senior manager in another company who did this. He dropped a few names, and one of those mentioned took his own life - only for everyone to find out the actual person on the list was someone else with the same name.
So sharing names in advance can have serious repercussions, unless you are absolutely sure of your facts.

Our CMO presently has 19 direct reports and is going down to 5. That's what.

If you're in Marketing, get your resume together. If you're in MSC, definitely get your resume together.

Big changes coming for Marketing across the board.

For anyone curious, effective tomorrow, our CMO will only have 5 dirdct reports. My Director directly stated to me that there would be some fat trimming in Marketing and its affecting us all. We have become too bloated for our own good.

May be instead the layoffs should come from the CIO office… think email debacle…

I don't know who 1czs+1bABijS8 is, but I can tell you this as fact. If you're a people manager, and you have to lay people off, you have known for several months this is the case, not 24 hours prior. Of course names might be in flux.

Secondly, of course some managers tell some people in advance to get ready even if they're not supposed to. This the real world, not a fantasy land of always following the rules.

"Agreed Managers get very little forewarning like a day or two at the most and would never risk telling anyone."
FLM here. Can confirm 100%.
Usually it's the 2nd & 3rd line-managers that are in the know. We only get notice either the day of, or rare case, the day/afternoon before.

Major layoffs are coming in the 3rd and 4th quarters to prepare for the official Kyndryl split. He-l, they're taking a huge chunk of revenue with them..also cost.

Can confirm… fake post because
Marketing is clueless. No way they know that’s happening.
But also… marketing is doomed. We know this. AK is NOT a marketing guy. He’s a “show me” not “tell me” guy. So all the Marketing fluffers that don’t produce stuff should be worried.

I would be shocked if there was zero severance. I think you will see the 30/90 day offer with 6-12 months of healthcare bridge. I certainly would start interviewing outside of IBM as the Redhat strategy is really starting to gain steam. If you are in Legacy IBM (everything besides mainframe), You are most likely vulnerable. IBM is fully embracing all things Redhat (their people, their products, their management, their way of thinking and their go to market strategy) It doesn’t matter if IBM has a compelling alternative offer. The play has been called and IBM is marching toward Redhat. They will drag a substantial amount of IBM’ers along with the execution of the Redhat strategy, BUT remember IBM spent 34 billion for something, and that was a CTL ALT DELETE to business as usual and a start of a new way to engage existing customers.

Made up story. I highly doubt any FLM would tell their employee they would be laid off before the official date and the official script is prepared for them to read.

Of course, there would be severance when/if it does happen.

I'd be shocked if there were no severance.
Being notified that it is in July is pretty short notices.
I wouldn't resign unless I had a job lined up, and even then, since your manager tipped you off that it will happen in July, I'd try to move my start date to August and collect even the paltry severance.
