Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

I should never have come here

Unfortunately, it's late now. Looking back, it seems to me that with the hard work and effort I put in here, I could have had a much better career somewhere else. I am leaving while I am still marketable. I wonder how many more people feel they have wasted their life here?

The worst thing is that you don't really learn anything of market value at Dell. All you do is fire fighting 24/7 until the layoff. As a result of this, your skills and knowledge become outdated.

"no wonder Dell is loosing billions of dollars"

First, it's "losing", if it were true.

Second, it's not.

I hope OP is networking and shopping around. Better negotiating power, if currently employed.

But - sticking around through August might get you a severance on your way out.

Definitely high risk of layoffs, with the new Co-COO being a Bain alum.

Network, update the resume, take some training, and try to be positive. Focusing on what you don’t like is unproductive IMO.

Too much nepotism and discrimination at Dell. They get sued almost every year. If you don’t have family member or good friend to get you in don’t matter how much experience or education you will get descriminated against. They like to look for cosmo types GQ and young folks even if they mo--ns. No wonder Dell loosing billions of dollars. They loose money on every computer sold.

So, I recently left Dell after 21 years. I worked with a lot of smart people and enjoyed my time there. It changed a lot in 21 years. The opportunity to work in different areas certainly was a major part of my willingness to endure the constant reorgs that were both necessary and unnecessary.

Somehow the Dell Exec management believes everything these consulting firms (Bain and Company) put in front of them regarding reorgs....its not that complicated. I never have a bad boss at Dell, and trust me I had a lot of bosses. Decisions are made at the 2nd tier of management which is typically the Director level. Your career, growth, security and direction is only as good as your relationship with your bosses boss. You can take that to the bank.

Different parts of the company are (again) going to be reorged coming in August 2021 because there still is a lot of duplication after the EMC acquisition. I expect to see a good deal of consolidation and layoffs especially in the field and account teams. Layoffs are layoffs, I'm not going to call them some three-letter acronym to make it more palatable. Given my skill set and connections, I figured this was the best time to leave as I get to pick what I do and who I do it for rather than have Dell tell me what I was going to do or show me the door. For me, it was time to go and I had plenty of suitors who put more than comparable offers in front of me at 59 years old.

If Dell is the toxic environment you’ve ever worked in; you haven’t worked at too many places.

I totally understand how you feel, I felt the same way working at Dell. Best thing that happened was when I was layed off, I felt like a giant weight had been lifted. The most toxic environment I've ever worked in.

I left once I got an offer from a good, growing company. That same offer also made me realize how underpaid I was at Dell—a lot.
