More zero notice resignations please

We need more people to stop giving two weeks notice. Walk in and throw your badge on the desk then walk out. You don’t need to worry about burning a bridge. You don’t want to come back and even if you did Exxon doesn’t hire those who resign back again.

Disrupt the business a bit when you leave. Don’t train your replacement.

@1pnl We might be thinking about two different things.

I guess I fail to see how what you’re saying has any real bearing on how a person should quit their job. The scenarios you’ve described require a lot of things falling into place in very specific ways. The risk here doesn’t balance against quitting in a way that maximally benefits me personally.

The goal in chess is to put the opponent’s king in check as fast as possible while losing the minimum number of pieces, not to drag the game out.

@1frj If you leave one company and go to another, and both you and the manager go to that company, it doesn’t matter whether or not you bring up previous employment. They still know who you are and what you did. The person that has to advocate for you when you’re not in the room…. is your manager. Why would they advocate for someone they know would leave at the drop of a dime? And don’t get me wrong, I would leave at the drop of a dime. But I would do so meticulously.

@1srm I’m not sure about that. There’s nothing that gives any of your former colleagues any more credibility than you yourself have, unless you’ve both landed in another O&G company 😳

The kind of problem you’re describing is easily avoided; just don’t discuss your previous employer or managers at your new job. Nobody wants to hear about them anyway.

Use company policy against them... don't tell them where you're going, just tell them that you're working for a competitor (even if you're not) and they'll walk you that day.

I agree with the PTO option, I don’t agree with giving no notice. Not because of my team members or anything like that, but because pretty much everyone that’s leaving the company is going to work for a handful of companies (amazon, Honeywell, HP etc). Meaning if someone leaves after you and ends up at the same company as you, there goes your reputation where you land. I have several people on my team that left for managerial positions at other companies. Chess, not checkers.

The other option is give 2 weeks notice to keep appearances. Don’t divulge critical information to your replacement and drag your feet.
Managers at XOM are so stupid that they won’t even realize you are just going through the motions.

Gave 3 weeks notice only because I could not wait to give my notice. The first week and 1/2 week absolutely , nothing happens for transition. So I take vacation and sadly had 3 days to transition to the “new” contractor hired. Good luck! Today is my last day and I’m out dis bit-h forever! I only wish I had done what the poster recommended and taken all of my PTO and started my new gig then came back and resigned. My new day one is on Tuesday and I continue to received emails from large companies requesting an interview. There is life after EM and why would anyone stay working for a company whose management does not value the #1 asset: their employees?? Don’t assume battered woman syndrome mentality. You can leave!

Then I'm getting 3 mo pay with some other bennies.

Some of us care about our team members and our direct supervisors. Even if the system is screwed up, I’m not going to throw my friends under the bus to “disrupt the system”.

Giving two weeks notice does more for the company than it does for the person who gives it.

I recommend using PTO when you have your start date at your next job, then no-notice quitting the day after PTO ends. It’s worked well for me. It’s also a nice way to give the middle finger to your boss on your way out 😁

Agree. Why not. Company walks people out all the time. Why put up with IT watching every click and keystroke after you give notice.
