I’m not looking for work. I was laid off after 33 years with Chevron in exactly the year I turned 65 and had planned to retire. I couldn’t have been more fortunate, because I received a one year salary bonus check as severance and 6 months of unemployment benefits. Sweet.

It’s been hard everyone I know on the technical side is still waiting or they moved states / industries.

Maybe the tech people could find jobs but the true O&G technical people are having a hard go at it.

Everyone that left Chevron had a new job within a week that doubled their salary and provided free insurance and 20 weeks of vacation. They also drive Ferraris and bang supermodels every night. But that’s pretty much expected when you have 10 PhDs from Stanford, Oxford, Cal Tech, etc.

Took VSP 11/19 bought another house and fixed it with the money. Started new job 2/20 with good people and less stress without ever reporting to the office still not. I could be dead and not even know it, or retire in 7, or maybe both, don’t know.

@3xpv, for your information an example of a “southern boarder” is a Central American living in somebody’s basement somewhere. Learn to spell before you are to be taken seriously.

@3xpv, Can you say JEALOUS? You sound so envious of someone who is successful. Calm down before the stress takes 3 years off your life expectancy.

Everyone does it, I am owed in some way, everyone is happy with my arrangement… I have heard it all before and hope you do get busted because you are a social leech and a low life. The fact you take pride in your unethical behavior only makes it worse. As for the souther boarder, it is interesting how many like to vilify the undocumented workers, and then give a pass the the illegal employers … if it were not for the latter the former would be not issue at all.

And illegal businesses also compete with the legit businesses that are licensed and fully insured ie doing it the right way.

@1kpz+1bFbPDoo: If you're under the radar like that then yes you are small potatoes to the IRS and may get away with it for awhile because you have no business license to operate and you have no liability insurance to cover your services. You only do small private single family home jobs. You'll never do commercial because then that will require a license and insurance which is trackable. If I were you, I'd get a better CPA.

Back to the original OP, my guess would be: 1) Those over 60 who left last year are likely peacefully retired, particularly if they banked more than 20 yrs of Chevron pension. 2) Those between 50-60 who left voluntarily or not, had a very low likelihood (<20%?) of finding similar jobs. 'Consultant' is not a similar job, particularly in this climate. 3) Those 40-50 probably had a 50-50 chance of finding a similar job, and many may be hanging around for the p-t-of-gold-at-the-end-of-the-rainbow hiring 'bo-m' many talk (fantasize) about. 4) Those 30-40 are in the 'sweet spot', I would guess had a 75-25 chance of finding a similar job, but likely at a lower equivalent psg or pay, i.e., a step backwards in their career path. 5) Those <30 probably had a 25-75 chance of finding a similar job, not enough experience considering all the 30-40 yr olds out there also looking for jobs.

@1yws, Obviously you are not at all familiar with the landscaping and lawn care business. It’s 90% cash and virtually the remaining 10% paid by check (cash, but traceable). The IRS doesn’t have the time or resources to pursue everyone or every business. It’s late in processing paper tax returns and often will give excuses for sending back refunds late. If you’re a smart business-minded individual and know how things work in our government agencies, you’ll know where not to step and where it’s it’s completely safe to wonder. Go about your own ways in life. I’m enjoying mine immensely.

All cash businesses essentially no longer exist aside from lemonade stands and even those take Apple Pay. I use a credit card for the lawn guy, laundry mat, car wash, food truck, church, etc. if you have an all cash business you are losing ten times the income you are gaining cheating on your taxes, cutting off your nose to spite your face. On top of that, the IRS has great tools to catch fools like you and are one agency you don’t want to fight. They will take away your piddly annuity, 401k, double wide, and lock up you and your alcoholic mullet-sporting son.

@ltv I don’t think I ever said you were a “big fish”.

I was just pointing out that it’s d-mb to admit to committing a federal crime (i.e. income tax evasion) on a forum like this or anywhere else. It doesn’t take much to raise a yellow flag with the IRS, and they tend to audit “little fish” (ex. restaurant owners) because it’s easy and they know cash businesses underreport income.

You’re right about one thing: I don’t care at all about your well being.

That is the typical way a thug justifies their actions. “I paid for sooo many years…”. Time to steal now? “They do a poor job at managing the money I paid”; great justification to break the law.
Those are just phrases you repeat yourself so you can sleep at night and watch yourself in the mirror. When your 38 year old son talks to other people your age that do the right thing, he quickly realizes who you teally are…..a thief.

@yrq, The federal government has bigger fish to fry than going after people who handle things as smart as me. BTW, you don’t genuinely care about my well being anyway, so why pretend you do. Oh, maybe you just want to discourage others. Fine, just don’t worry about me. I’m doing very well and sleeping extra well at night. Thank you.

@sta You know you just admitted to a federal crime, right?

If you’re going to break the law, you might not want to tell the internet how you’re doing it, along with your age, the age of your accomplices, your relation to them, their occupations, and where you used to work.

Best of luck to you.

@dev, Keep your principles to yourself. After so many years of paying my taxes and supporting my government, it soon enough will dawn on many of us, and you as well, the con game that’s being played on all of us. I won’t waste our time lecturing you or anyone, as it doesn’t concern anyone but me. I’ve paid my dues in all my years to the government and yet I don’t see much good that has come of it. For my remaining years of income earning, I’ll do things my way now. You do things your way.

@sta, are you proud of that?? Is Tax evasion something your are fond of and practice with your 38 year old son?
Money can’t buy principles….

My age was a huge deterrent to finding a job after I was laid off at Chevron. But, that didn’t stop me from being gainfully employed. I took a small risk and started a small side gig that is a 90% cash business that I’m happy to say took off quickly 5 years ago. Today, my business has quadrupled in size and is still mostly cash. It now occupies my full time attention 8 to 9 hours a day, six days a week. Principally for federal tax reasons and because I started collecting my Social Security this year at 62, my CPA advised me to transfer the business to my 38 year old son, although I run it myself day to day and pocket mostly undeclared cash income.
