Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM CMO is taking ‘a completely new approach’ to B2B marketing

E-commerce will also play a big role in IBM’s future, as businesses shift to buying both
hardware and software online. “I envision us becoming much easier to purchase from
digitally,” Piñeyro Sublett said.

More body bags will be needed.

Ahhhhh their so cute when they are young and foolish. Does anyone, and I mean anyone think this is going to work? This is coming from a company that can’t stand up a web presence for any of their products (Go ahead and google any IBM product, I’ll wait). So did you get all of the technical info you needed on that product, all of the licensing info, all of the terms, and all of the pricing, or did the last line of the web page say “contact your IBM rep”? IBM has never been able to embrace an e-commerce presence, because they have zero idea of what they sell. The labs and marketing have a moat in between them that is impassable. NOW you want to encompass that into a self service portal? GOOD LUCK with that. IBM has always been a face to face company, and every effort to go away from that has ended in disaster

  1. IBM PC company
  2. IBM.com
  3. Softlayer
  4. IBM call center
  5. IBM partner world

Etc, etc etc

AK thinks that sales people are unnecessary. He’s going to get a real kick in the teeth. No other tech company operates like this.

Reorg in sept, this is not news. Of course layoffs will be a part of that. Every aspect of Marketing is getting carpet bombed. And it’ll be much leaner. H3ll it needs to be. It’s so bloated rn

rehashing a failed scenario from the 2000's... sad... their dominant customer base is PO driven and often RFQ/P required.

This all assumes that people will go to IBM self-serve sales website at all, be able to operate it if they can find it, understand what they are choosing, etc.

I suspect the loss of an army of sales and marketing cold-calling and keeping IBM in customers minds will lead to a huge loss of sales. If another company provides coherent real-time help they will win that sale and IBM will lose it. Probably forever.

These new self-service tools will probably be about as successful as a Lotus Notes migration.

This is just stupid. Never ever gonna happen. Carla is obviously fitting in quickly with other IBM execs. She will talk a good game and waste a ton of resource. If she actually spoke to some real clients she would quickly learn they don't want MORE self help because at IBM that means No help.

Unless they fix the commission incentives so that Sales Managers are comped for digital and subscription sales, this is going precisely nowhere - just like every other IBM attempt at this.

As always, culture eats strategy for breakfast.
