I've heard the old saying "a happy employee is a productive employee" but is that really true? You'd think if that were true more companies would be going out of their way to make sure their employees are happy. It looks to me (at least judging by AT&T's management model) that "scared employee is a productive employee" holds more truth.

A good job is one where work is so immersive you forget about everything else. That makes the day fly bye. But without pay to live on it won't be enough. If you have both, you're doing well.
Yes, sorry to say it is true. T used to be a great company to work for! By today's standards, it's become a mediocre last resort job! Call centers are losing people by the droves and not sure why. Perhap, they're finding better opportunities elsewhere where it isn't a job of last resort, but a career to hang your hat on!
AT&T is a good place to work, especially if you don't let the few malcontents bring you down.
AT&T is the size of a mid-sized city. Like any cities, there are the good neighborhoods, and the bad neighborhoods. For most of my career there, I was in a good neighborhood, with bosses that I could and did drink a beer with. But, I had a taste of the other situation.
But, that is why there isn't "one" AT&T and why no one can make a universal declaration about T. I think you can about the job title though. Call Center - no drinking with the boss there.

Says the person so terrified they have to do everything possible to convince themself that T is actually a good place to work, conveniently ignoring each and every piece of real evidence to the contrary.

The real truth is that senior executives at mega corporations don't give a wet slap about their employees -- not whether they're happy, not whether they are well compensated, not about anything. For places like T and people like Stink an employee is simply an economic hardship that needs to be tolerated with as little investment as possible. It's purely a numbers game.
Employees are simply replaceable parts. The punchline is that employees don't get it, and so they still do their best and work hard in the mistaken belief that productivity, loyalty, and dedication are the keys to success and longevity. That's how mega corps can treat their people like mierde but still get a lot out of them.
Smaller companies can't get away with that and so they do more to keep their people content. But then again, small companies generally don't have the resources to match salary with the big boys. But then again, as T has shown us all, decent salary doesn't make a place good to work at.
If your not happy nor productive, get out.
