I wanted to build a career

Hoping my job won’t be outsourced is no way to live. I realize that if I want to build a career then I’ll have to take what I learned from BofA and look elsewhere. I believed that when you work hard good things will happen. But here and now I find that mantra isn’t the case.

Very true. Don’t rely on building a career here. Take the knowledge and skill you have acquired and take it with you. These clowns don’t care about what you know.

It's the sl--e factor. Shady business practices, rampant incompetence, cronyism, and arrogance abound. You can't build a career at a circus, unless you want to be a silly clown, frantic juggler, or high wire acrobat. Think of yourself as a self-employed independent contractor that will work for the highest bidder (in a better environment).

One of the only ways to move up in BOA is to brown nose upper management. This company rarely promotes competent people. I have seen very capable and smart people left behind because they are not part of the club . This company is nothing like other companies I have been to where your results and ability were the main factors in getting promoted. Treat this company nothing more than a stop and go.

Banking is no longer a good place to build your career and if you are smart you will leave this place before it's too late, while you still have some hope in your future. This is a good place to get some experience, hone in your skills, connect with like minded people, get your bearings in life and update your resume. If you are ambitious and want to be in control of your life, get out and build your career in a different industry, where there is more stability and growth opportunity (as opposed to hating your current job and moving to a different department in disgust...over and over...). Here you will become a cog, a drone. And of course, things will only get worse from here but if you like chaos this might be the place for you. Don't take my word for it, I tend to be a hopeless optimist and ignore entropy. I'm sure there are some people here that will chime in and share their experiences but building a career here is a stretch (I don't want to get into any tangents as to what exactly will stretch, but you get the idea).

Sad, but true. There used to be careers here (if you started 25+ years ago), but alas, all they offer now is a job. Granted, a wide variety of jobs, but not really a career in the true sense anymore. Just cranking out a different widget on some other cr---y team.

They've also dramatically scaled back retiree benefits, which a real career historically provide for loyalty and performance.

If you want more money, you definitely have to leave and change companies a lot these days. (No stigma to hopping around anymore.)

yep, if you work hard your reward is more work with only token increases in wages. Take what you learned and jump ship for those giant pay increases. That's the way the world works now.
