Thread regarding Ford layoffs

How long to stay in a current position before moving to another dept?

So I have been at Ford close to 2 years and to be honest, I am getting burnt out. What is the acceptable norm (timewise staying within your current position) before you start looking for a position at another department?

Officially they tell us that 18 months to two years is the acceptable timeline but, as others have suggested, if you are a solid performer they’ll block you behind the scenes while telling you they support the move. I once applied for a new position after five years in the same spot. My boss said they supported me. A few weeks after the interview process with no word I mentioned it to my boss and they said someone else had been selected. A few days later the LL4 who interviewed me reached out to see why I had changed my mind. Apparently the LL4 selected me and my boss told them I was no longer interested in the position while telling me I wasn’t selected. The interviewing LL4 took it higher and I ended up moving to the position. If the interviewing LL4 hadn’t contacted me I would have never known my boss tried to block me.

@1bwh+1bNCNiP3 Is correct, the better you are the more likely your move will be blocked. Some bosses just flat out tell you that you are not allowed to move, some pretend to support your move but sabotage you behind the scenes, and then ruin your career with a whisper campaign against you.

If you are a good employee, your manager won’t let you leave. Some will say you can, but then secretly block you. Others are more forthcoming about it. A certain PD manager told my friend (with a PhD) that if he asks about a transfer one more time to a new department, the only transfer he will see is “out the door.”

If you are a low performer, a whiner, or is causing drama with your coworkers, or your manager or supervisor doesn’t like you, you will be able to transfer. I am guessing since you are on this site, you are one of those employees who always whines how busy they are, but actually never does any work, so I think you should ask your manager for a transfer and you will get it.

While most people 'feel' 2yrs is perfectly acceptable at most companies, be prepared for management push back at Ford. First, your manager is likely to get into a snit about it. While they may give you a line they will 'support' you, bottom line they won't. Reason is that they 'own' you right now and the threat of you leaving could make replacing you difficult on them. If your job is known to be garbage and has burned you out to the point of leaving, who do you think will want to apply for it. So if you leave and they can't find a replacement, they could get in trouble. So what will they do to avoid all this? They will spread lies about you so if someone calls to ask if you are available, they will do we what Ford management does best, act in their own self interest.
