Thread regarding IBM layoffs

How much respect does IBM have in the industry?

I wonder how respected do you think this company is within the industry? I would like someone to convince me that this is still a respectable company, but unfortunately, I increasingly think that it is not. Moreover, I think that it will enjoy less and less respect as time goes on.

Used to respect and be proud to work there - but then saw the massive prejudice they have for anyone over 45-50 years old and the inventive ways they have to demoralize and get rid of them. I can't respect them, no matter what technology they may or may not have in the marketplace - they are simply horrible for our society.

It's silly that anytime something not completely negative is said on the forum a bunch of people get offended and start making up stories of organized HR conspiracy. There are 350k people in IBM. Not all agree with your take and not all experience was the same. Cool your mamms.

I know him. He's a total clown. Almost like a cartoon character - everything he says is utter nonsense. But as he plays for AK's team, he's got nothing to worry about.

You are correct. There are a bunch a GBS trolls on Fishbowl always defending IBM. One of these trolls is Vijay Vijayasankar, some GBS partner. That guy absolutely sucks!

Hello! Ex-IBM'er here ( July 2020 alumni). I love selling against IBM, and I consistently win because, well you know why, you're internal and get it. And honestly- nothing gives me more joy then burning my old line of business.
Not sour grapes- IBM culture, specifically in my old group, was uber toxic and run by a bunch of alpha-id--ts. I checked out in 2019 anyway, but it was a cherry on top to have gotten a fat package, and double-dip.
So keep up the ineffectiveness for the sake of my commissions please!!

This old chestnut, "if you ain't first you're last." IBM may be lame, behind market, full of overbloated management that does virtually nothing.. but they still rake in one of the highest profits of any company in the world - $13B free cash flow. Their cloud is actually doing really well (they now have 26B a year in just cloud revenue), just not NEARLY as well as MS, AWS. They have somehow managed to make more off less revenue over the last couple years - which is tough to do. IBM looks just fine on a resume. Is it the best? No. So, who cares? Skills are ALL people care about these days. You think Google gives a sh-- where you've been. All they care about now is how you do in an interview. True story.

Management has no sympathy in this organisation. I posted a message on FishBowl regarding the strain on my work life balance and got trolled by a bunch of GBS Executives telling me to stretch as much as possible to support multiple accounts and do anything the MD says. They told me I didn’t value the opportunities coming my way. These guys suck!!

IBM on your resume is nothing special. But it depends on your specialty. For example I would think Security and software experience is of more value than say storage where IBM is a rounding error in the industry

IBM is definitely no longer a tech industry leader and is struggling to be relevant.

For the young techies, IBM is not on their radars.

i am finding it less and less relevant - customers just done seem to want to talk to IBM. Or if they do, they will take in what IBM said, but then find another vendor to implement ibm's ideas

@ygz+1bNGonpS, not only among the senior management, but also the arrogance is spreading to lower management like an infectious variant of COVID.

The individual employees are well respected, I believe ... folks in the industry know you have to be one tough, tenacious, hard-working S-B to work there and put up with all the BS and control-freak non-value-add management nowadays ... like the song goes: "If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere". The company itself, though? Not respected. At all.

None. It's look down upon if you stay here for more than few years.

Very little respect in the industry vs 20 or 30 years ago. So sad for what what was once an iconic company. Ginni and AK screwed the pooch. Don’t expect this company will survive long term. Sr management arrogance is the down fall.
