Cisco pays 70% of market rate for 50-60% of engineers. As a result, They have lost large number of engineers to startups, apple, Facebook, arista and amazon networking group.

That's a sad statistic to see now. When I joined Cisco in '08, if you could believe HR, recruiters and internal announcements, they were advertising that Cisco paid in the top 75th percentile of the market. It used to be above average, not below average.

And, with what I'm making now, I can't afford to buy a home where I live.

Grade 11 base average salary = 160k
Grade 10 base average salary = 145K
Plus 15% bonus.

I know grade 10 making base $170K with 20 years of experience in San jose

In 2008, a friend in the Bay area said “every computer engineer person in the Bay area was making at least $120K”. I applied and I got a position there based on that advice. Folks, that was 12 years ago! In 2013, a contact at Cisco said I should request and get paid at minimum $140K base as a grade 10 NCE plus 20% bonus/year. Given my masters degree and experience, I was hired at grade 11. That was 8 years ago! There is a serious salary stagnation going on. Many people dont realize that house prices quadrupled, food prices at least double since 2008. I see lot of broke people employed in IT these days.

Cisco is a relationship based company. Do you have friends or family in decision-making roles?

There is no structure. The only structure is if your face fits and if you have highly placed friends. The deal you negotiated when you were hired is crucial since from that point onward you will hardly ever get a raise, and if you do, it will be a measly one. Oh, and your willingness to engage in CSR activities. Nothing else matters.
